I don't think Bill is necessarily anti MS - just anti sneaky bullshit that Bill Gates & Co seem to feel its necessary inflict upon people unnecessarily.

Why not move? easy....$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.... plus a hundred legacy PC programs that are not duplicated on a Mac... )plus my advanced age)
The place I got that link has turned mostly to Linux.

Why post? Greg nailed it.

Bill Gates hasn't worked there for a while -- he retired about five years or more back. You could have as well if you'd had his money.

I don't believe the stuff you're eating your heart out about is restricted to MS, Bill. It's rife throughout the industry, I suspect, so I don't see any point in getting panties in a bunch about it - it's going to happen, one way or another, sooner or later, no matter what OS or software you use.

But, it's each to his own, as they say... 👍😎

The best way to avoid getting your "panties in a bunch", Backwoodsman is either to go "commando"....or just wear rugged MALE underwear like you are supposed to, you silly man!

Truth is, I'm not "eating my heart out "....just noting what fairly knowledgeable experts have discovered. It may make a big difference to those who are undecided about upgrading.

I am holding on to Win 7 Pro until they pry it out of my poor, dead fingers.... ;>)

I installed it on a friend's laptop last weekend and diligently turned off all of those "report to the mother-ship" switches. It sounds like they're only window dressing. And even though we chose to save her original settings, I had to hide the "Cortana" feature and reset her default browser to Chrome. MS had set it to Edge.

I have mixed feelings about holding onto Win7 - it is solid and supported right now, but they're pulling the rug out from under the older operating systems pretty quickly. Only IE 11 is supported now, also.

Well, of course I DO wear rugged male underwear, LH - it was Bill's panties I was worried about! But he says they're OK, so I'm gonna stop worrying on his behalf.

Commando really does NOT appeal - most unhygienic, and hygiene is likely to become a problem as one advances into one's dotage. 😜😎

BillD - I get where you're coming from. I didn't have an awful lot of choice, my old XP machine was giving up the ghost, and my new one came with 8.1 pre-installed. Didn't particularly like 8.1 which felt clunky so, once the initial Win 10 hoo-ha was over, I decided to go with it. I use my PC for music, recording, photos, email and shooting my mouth off on a few forums, no 'business' use. I use good internet security and my bank provides additional security software to help prevent keyloggers and other spyware and malware, so I'm comfortable that I'm as safe as I can make myself.

But, of course, one must do whatever feels comfortable.

Windows 10 updates still largely opaque - from ZDNet this morning.

As promised, Microsoft has begun providing release notes on the updates to Windows 10. Terry Myerson, Microsoft Executive Vice President of Windows and Devices, said "starting next month, Microsoft will take a first stab" at providing this documentation. The company's "first stab" at providing information on updates to the user didn't cut very deep.

I was never all that clear on what users were looking for, but I don't feel any better informed by the Windows 10 update history page provided by Microsoft. It consists of a bullet list with a sentence, perhaps even just a sentence fragment, on the purpose of the update. Some examples:

  • Fixed issue that delayed the availability of songs added to the Groove Music app in Windows 10 Mobile.
  • Improved security in the Windows kernel.
  • Improved Silverlight performance.
  • Fixed issue that didn't allow a Windows 10 PC to remotely configure a server.

You can go a step further and examine the KB articles on the Windows 10 cumulative updates, links to which are provided on the update history page: KB3135173 and KB3135174.

Follow the link to read the rest.

Window 10 apparently doesn't support Live Mail, so I would be having to re-do all my mailing lists, contacts on Outlook - not a quick job so am holding out until I've got a week to spare.

No, you just carry on using Windows Live Mail -it works fine in Win 10. It's not that Win 10 doesn't support it, it's that MS aren't supporting it any longer, so there won't be any more software updates for it.

The Windows 10 mail app will use your existing contacts and will import your 'old' mails. What it won't do is allow you to create folders in-app, or sort mails by sender/date etc.

I've been on Win 10 since September, I'm still using Live Mail, no problems.

Well, I dunno. I think I have about ten computers running Windows 10, and they're doing well. I have some staff members who are reluctant to change, but I think I'm going to force them to. Seems to me it should be easier to have all of our computers running Windows 10.
I'm really not too concerned about Microsoft's data collection, since most of it seems to be anonymous. I guess I just can't buy into paranoia.

Reading or not reading ads is not the problem. For me the problem is the time they take to appear and the computer resources they consume. We don't all have super fast computers and state of the art. internet connections. Ads are the BIG slowdown!

Didn't want W10 & had been warned off W8 but hard to find W7 in usual outlets, so got stuck with it. Hated all those 'tiles' and was delighted to find a website which keeps W10 but makes it LOOK like W7, so now I know where things are without wasting hours to no good purpose!   just google -change W10 screen to look like W7

To answer Joe's remarks: When I got Win7, I learned that I needed Win 7 Pro in order to run the many older freeware programs that I have collected for 5- 10 years. As Win8 was introduced, I heard more & more stories about it refusing to deal with older programs... and Windows 10, whatever its strengths, is also an attempt to herd all the sheep into the same pen, following the same update procedures and doing whatever they wish with data collection & tracking. Their assurance that it will be a big, fancy, cozy pen with hot & cold running 'features' does not answer MY concerns.
I have a fairly narrow view of how I want MY browsers to look, behave and update, and I have strong preferences about where MY data is stored and what programs I use to access it and manipulate it. I want nothing to do with the "cloud"...(there is no 'cloud'... that is a euphemism for "our big computer(s), not your little computer")
Now, I ain't so young anymore, and I may be able to avoid this Win10 stuff until 'the end'.. but if not, any changes I make will be to Linux, as tedious as THAT will be to sort thru.

For those who 'go with the flow' and routinely take whatever updates M$ offers, I hope it all works out for you. I will be watching from a hill overlooking your comfy pen and tending my little garden of software as best I can.

BillD - I have a very similar view, but I started earlier. I didn't like Vista's licensing terms, so I stuck with XP. The terms for later versions were even worse and in 2009 I decided to take a serious look at Linux. I found a distribution I liked (MEPIS) and started migration using a dual-boot system. MEPIS is now dormant but it's successor, MX-15, is a great operating system.

I'm also past my allotted span, but with the help of a very active community forum I was comfortable in Linux in a couple of months. I now have XP running on a virtual machine for a couple of programs I need.

I've recently had dealings with Win8.1 and Win10 and I'm very glad I don't have to deal with them on a regular basis. One of the most frustrating aspects is updates - a simple update of a couple of programs on Win8.1 took nearly 15 minutes, plus a reboot. The same thing on Linux takes less than a minute and I haven't rebooted in weeks.

    Phil

GUEST - you leave your computer permanently switched on?

BillD - we've had this conversation before, I think. I'm not paranoid and I'm not a computer-geek, I don't use lots of exotic software, I don't want to defeat my OS or try to make my computer do weird, mind-blowing stuff - I'm just an old guy who does some word-processing, a few spreadsheets, recording my own music, photo-editing and cataloguing, email and surfing the 'net. I don't pay a lot of attention to the scare-mongerers. All I want from my PC is that it will do those things. It does them fine with Win 10.

It's a case of 'one man's meat', of course, and we each must do that which suits us.

Indeed we must... and 15+ years ago, the internet/WWW and browsers were generally designing things to make it easy possible for everyone to "do that which suits us." Somehow, advertisers and governments and important tools like Google, using exotic programming, saw all the 'virtues' in controlling as much of the operational aspects as possible, while 'giving' us shiny toys.

I am daily grateful for Google and wide access to music ...etc. I just wish there were not so many strings being pulled in the background.

Cutting strings has become a sort of hobby. ☺

I use the old Windows Media Player all of the time. It was in several Windows versions, and offered as a separate $10 download from Microsoft for Win 8/8.1. Not available for Win10. It was a great idea that has gradually lost support and now mainly works as a DVD recorder (I have a TV receiver card in my computer).

I searched methods to cobble together software to do the same thing (manage recorded media on this computer and share it around the house on the computer network) and the "free" versions are not a pure play. You have to cobble together stuff and the YouTube videos discussing how to do it are long and rather opaque. I found a program from JRiver that I purchased for under $50 and donated $5 to the site that provides the channel programming information and I can load it into all of the computer and devices in the house. This software would survive the upgrade, if I get around to it.

The other software I use that isn't in Win 10 is Movie Maker. I looked at the Microsoft site and people state that they downloaded and can still use it (as part of the "Windows Live Essentials" package you can download and install).

After I have video downloaded from my camera OR from the WWW/Internet, I use VLC player (sort of the industry standard)OR PotPlayer (the easiest interface) OR Light Alloy (a contender, but I'm not sure of all its settings yet)
Now, when I see an interesting video on a web site, I go to my PaleMoon browser..(Firefox will work, but I like the independent attitude of PaleMoon).... and with the add-on Flashgot installed, and get the video with a couple of clicks. (I used to do a complex thing of finding & following the target in my browser cache... but that was TEDIOUS)

I assume these will still work on Win10.

W 10 has a default program called Groove Music which tries to take over my music files. I have used Windows Media Player and have grown used to the format, and have lots of files saved in the library. I was instructed how to change the default settings (under the settings function) and now groove music is gone....so far.

and I recently joined the ranks of the modern and got an MP3 player... and was able to sync it using WMP....so now I can plug it into my new vehicle sound system (it has both USB and 1/8 inch audio plug ins) and listen as i drive along....

    now, that's more like it!

Yes, basically. I use 'Suspend' overnight and if I'm out all day (same as shutting a laptop lid) but I only 'Shutdown' if I'm away for a week.

The instructions for setting back to Classic were old Windows instructions and didn't work with the Asus laptop my neighbor is using. But I did finally figure out the problem - the computer had converted to "metro tiles" and windows would only open full sized and not adjust downward. I poked and looked around and finally figured out that the computer had reset itself to "Tablet Mode." She was playing Solitaire and the computer popped up a window offering to reset to tablet mode because it was "easier for games." She was stuck there until we figured this out.

So far Windows 10 looks like a pain in the butt. But I did find and point out that there is indeed a software program that will give the Windows 7 appearance. It seems just a little creepy that you have to go outside of Windows to get the classic Windows appearance.

I converted my wife's laptop from Win7 to Win10. I deleted the menu tiles for programs she didn't use (most of them) and added ones for the programs she did use (eg LibreOffice). Having done that I reckon it looks and works much like Win7. The main difference is the menu - which is different but no worse IMO. I find that the search box is the easiest way to find settings.

I also put 'hibernate' back into the power menu.

The Win7 backup is still available, but I'm using the new File History backup facility.

According to this, you just press the + icon and type them in:
    How_to_Add_contacts_to_the_People_App_in_Windows_10
But most people transfer contacts from their old computer. Does he/she not have one? And if so does it still work, what mail program was it, and were there many contacts?

The modern fashion for holding contacts separately from your email program comes from smartphones. The designer's assumption now is that you will simply share the same contacts - in your Apple/Google/Microsoft account. But you don't have to; my wife continues to use Thunderbird for email.

    http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2447177/updategate-windows-10-is-resetting-default-apps-back-to-microsoft-stock

"WINDOWS 10 has a new trick up its sleeve. This time, it's 'restoring' app defaults to the bundled Universal Apps in the operating system.

A reader told us that, despite being a long time user of Irfanview as his primary photo app, he was greeted with a message saying: 'A default app has been reset,' only to discover that his new photo app was Photos, the bundled offering.

He traced the problem back to KB3135173, a cumulative update issued for February which was pushed out as an update last week. After deleting the update, he discovered the next day that Windows had reinstalled it, and reset the defaults again."

This evening I heard the best reason for NOT going over to Win10 - it won't work with older versions of your Microsoft Office software. At least he hasn't found a way to make it do so, and he's quite tech savvy. The only thing he can find is the download Office360 that wants him to lease it every year, so for now he's doing without. It's too late for him to revert back, and he got rid of the older files to make space.

I think I've managed to solve that problem, although I haven't fully transitioned to the MacBook. But seriously - I turn on the power and before I can count to 10, the thing has booted. Plus, it has Garage Band. Just starting to realize what amount of crap I've been putting up with.

I'm finding boot-up time is getting longer and longer. It doesn't generally bother me because my standard practice is to switch on then go and make a cup of tea, by which time it's up and running.

I had a weird experience this week, when I found that Word had disapeared (like, it was no longer visible anywhere on the computer) and the rest of the Office 2013 modules wouldn't work because a file was apparently 'missing'. Everything was fine a week ago - WTF happened? I tried to uninstall Office 2013 - no dice. So, having an extended warranty, I called Dell and spent an afternoon on-line with them while they fixed it. Frustrating.

My grouse with MacBooks is the outrageously-inflated price. It may not seem too bad to Americans, who get everything cheap, but in the UK a MacBook of similar spec to my Dell would have cost more than double the price of the Dell - £1,600 (2,400 USD!) for the MacBook against £700 (1,050 USD) for the Dell. That's a non-starter for me, no matter how wonderful MacBooks might be - my pension dictates it is so.

Win10 is supposed to be compatible back to Office 2007, but not with 'Office Starter 2010'. It's incompatible with Office 2003 and XP. I thought that it checked compatibility as part if the upgrade but I don't remember. My wife uses LibreOffice which is free.

Win 10 did reset the default picture viewer as mentioned by Bill D - which was annoying, but the new one works OK so I left it.

I read that if you get adverts on the lock screen you can turn them off.

My nextdoor neighbor has managed to get some kind of rootkit malware that will not be removed by the robust Internet security I put in place a month or two ago. And Malwarebytes sees it and removes PUP files but it's right back after the scan. So I'm doing something new that is found in Windows 8 and 10, the System Refresh.

We tried System Restore to a date a month ago, but it isn't working, the rootkit is blocking the completion of that operation. So by using refresh (or the totally draconian reset) you re-write clean Windows files over the corrupt set. Refresh leaves data in place.

It takes a while, she'll call when it finishes running. Then we'll see what it looks like. I'll have to reload Chrome and Kaspersky and such.

The on/off button does not work at all and the search button also does not get any response. To get on line, I have to press the GUI that looks like a speaker, click on "What is AcerCloud" and then use the opened tab to access the internet. This is no way to run an airline, folks. Based on this experience we are not likely to "upgrade" our non-touchscreen machines to Win 10.

EBarnacle, right next to the "Start" button icon, you should find a box marked "search the Web and Windows." Search for "power settings." If you look around a bit on what comes up, you should come up with a link titled "choose what the power switch should do" - and then make your choice.
It has taken me some time to learn the ins and outs. I guess it helps that I have to handle the problems of some twenty computers. I get plenty of experience.
But for me, Windows 10 works fine, and it has given new life to some of our old computers.

It's a 'recommended update' so unless they do something to actively stop it, or have all updates turned off, then I think so. I would wonder what they have done to prevent it so far? I would also suggest to them that it would be better to do it at a time of their choice when you're available to help.

Three weeks ago I had an issue with MS Office 2013 on my Dell (Win 10) that necessitated their support guy to take control of my PC and make the fix (I have a four year warranty with support). While trying to make the fix, he commented that my machine was very slow for an i7 processor (like taking ten minutes for a reboot!) and that he suspected malware. He ran Malwarebytes with no luck, and tried a few other things (which I didn't understand). Eventually, he asked me to back up my settings and data, and said he'd call me the next day to do a clean install of 8.1 and clean upgrade to 10.

The clean installs went fine, and I spent the next couple of evenings reloading my settings and data, and re-installing my other software...MS Office 2013, Reaper, Audacity, Photoshop, yadda yadda. The result is a PC that runs like lightning, and everything is working exactly as it should.

During our conversations the Dell guy told me that they do not recommend the standard upgrade, which often results in the kinds of problems that people are relating above, but that they always recommend a clean upgrade, which invariably produces good results.

Scary stuff, but well worth the effort, AFAIC.

I wonder why he re-did the Win 8 to Win 10 upgrade? You can clean-install Win 10 on top of an upgraded system.

I found Win 10 was slower than Win 7 after upgrade, but speeded up a lot after a while. (I assumed that this was after the one-month period when you can revert - but that's only a guess.) It's now quicker than Win 7 was.

If it were actually my machine I'd clean install too.

I think He was concerned that **something somewhere** was corrupted, and therefore he wanted to flatten the system and start again with a completely clean system. The machine was originally built and supplied by Dell with 8.1, so I'm guessing that stripping everything out and rebuilding the system from ground upwards was considered the 'safest' way to cure whatever had gone wrong.

It certainly seems to have worked.

I need to either get rid of those updates or be prepared to tell it what I don't want - the "typical" install takes the computer completely into Microsoft's control with a MS email, logon, and Cortana and it's ilk in control, search via Bing, etc. You have to do a custom install and still you need to remove a lot of bloat MS adds.

Well, FWIW, I let the Windoze 10 update go through a couple of months ago, to see how it works, and I've not had any problems so far. I'm using MS Office 2003 without problems, I've still got Media Player and Movie Maker here, all my old freeware photo manipulation program(me)s still work, the only thing I had trouble with was Acrobat Reader, so I replaced it with a Freeware .pdf reader which works fine.

Seems W10 has two modes, Desktop which works much like W7, and Tablet which works much like W8. On my desktop, it reasonably enough works in Desktop mode, but on the laptop, which is a touch-screen jobbie, it kept trying to switch to Tablet mode til we found how to tell it not to. (Don't ask, I can't remember now. At least I know it can be done, so I'll find it again if I need to). I use Firefox as my browser and third party email progs, so I don't know about MS's versions - my old progs work as normal and most of the time I could still be on W7 for most of the things I do. So, no problems.

Oh, and I also use IObit's Advanced System Care, which turns off a lot of the insecurities and reporting functions, and also prevents downloads from changing my default homepage and search engine, which seems like a Good Thing.

I'm sure all of these things have their downsides, but hey - we're getting a hell of a lot of function for 'free'. If you're not paying for the product, you ARE the product.

There is an icon in the lower right of the touch screen, or when you swipe from the lower right from the edge, it appears, and you can resume the laptop mode.

I downloaded the software that is at the equivalent level of the OS that was in my machine. I had purchased a laptop with some mild version of Win 8 and purchased the full-octane version at work (at universities we get software at a deep discount). Upgraded to the heavy duty Win8, then Win 8.1 came along and I did that upgrade. I figured out more or less how to use it, but there was a crash a while back and the Microsoft tech in India couldn't get the 64bit version to operate so loaded and ran the 32bit version. My machine was crammed full of old OS files by this time and since it is a SSD device it didn't have that much room to begin with.

I had to uninstall a few things and then I did the Win 10 upgrade. Once I determined it was working I simply cleaned the disk and used the appropriate button to remove the old OS files. While I was at it I compressed the contents of the disk, so I've cleared a lot out one way or another. If I do this on the desktop (it runs Win7, and runs very well, also the ultimate version) I won't bail on the old software in a hurry.

The upgrade and the clearing of old OS didn't take more than a couple of hours, but the compression took many hours. Overnight and into this afternoon.

    From: Mr Red

Just spotted a problem with my webpages, sorted now. I generate HTML in VBA from a spreadsheet.

The diagnosis was a change in the behaviour of Excel (who knows what else) and the solution was to include re-calculates (aka F9) at strategic points in my software.

Because macros can flip between pages and spreadsheets you would see a lot of flashing which even for non-epileptics is disconcerting so I switch off window refresh. This has sufficed for 15 years until about a day ago. Maybe the second round of updates today has put the function back to what it was. Who knows? I sorted the problem before Micro$oft so my solution stays where it is!

The message is - if things start becoming odd - hit F9.

I upgraded my computer to Windows 10 (a mistake if I may say so) and ever since the sound coming through my speakers and headphones have been buzzing and glitching. I'm also having the same symptoms when digitizing LPs using a turntable plugged into the USB port.

I've looked online for solutions, but none have worked so far.

I'm running Conexant Smartaudio HD and the driver is current for my machine (Toshiba Satellite C655).

Anyone having similar issues? Any solutions beyond "Buy a new machine"?

Did you look to see what features of the computer itself might not work with the new OS? For example, I have a Sony Vaio and they put out an alert about certain models that might not have use of some devices (or cards) with Win10.

There is also a known issue with older software. You may need to uninstall and reinstall the software (Smartaudio HD) or see if there is an updated version of it.

You have 30 days to decide to keep Win 10 or revert back, so do all of your testing now and decide to keep it or not. After 30 days you can't go back.

    http://www.cnet.com/how-to/5-reasons-to-upgrade-to-windows-10-right-now/

    You can change your mind

If you upgrade to Windows 10 and decide that the new operating system isn't for you, you have 30 days to roll back to your older version of Windows. And by upgrading once -- even if you downgrade later -- you'll have secured the free Windows 10 license for future upgrades. In other words, you can upgrade to Windows 10, roll back to your old operating system, and then you'll still be able to upgrade to Windows for free after July 29.

    Good to know.

I stuck my Office 2002 CD-ROMS in my Windows 10 laptop and it worked. I have Word and I don't pay. I'd bought a new laptop with Windows 8 three years ago, took one look at all those incomprehensible tiles and put the bloody thing away until last month. My old, venerable Vista laptop churns valiantly on. Once I knew that Windows 10 was going to cost me money after July, I thought I'd better bite the bullet. The upgrade from 8, via 8.1 first, was painless. Everything works, it was easy to install free Avast, my Audio Cleaning Lab works, it's great. And, wonder of wonders, the battery on the Samsung laptop that had lain derelict for three years is as good as new. All I have to do now is teach meself how to use Windows 10. It looks friendly to me. What's not to like? 🙂

After attempting in vain to resuscitate my Win 7 machine, I bought a new Acer with Win 10 factory installed (not an upgrade). I was thrilled when I loaded my old programs, tested them and all worked.

Enter the MS Upgrade Monster. (insert appropriately sinister music here)

The updates appear to be automatic with no provision to prevent them. Now none of my MS Office 2000 applications will respond to a "Save" or "Save as" command. (Yes, I realize that it's a 16 year old program, but it worked fine on Win 7 and also worked fine on Win 10 before MS installed an upgrade that apparently blocks it.)

MS has kindly allowed me a 30 day trial of Office 2016 which they will gladly rent to me for the paltry sum of $10/month.

Other than that, and that this machine seems to have issues staying turned on, first try, in the day, (Yes, I turned off all power saving options), I'm pleasantly surprised at how painless it was to switch to Win 10 from Win 7.

I open the File Explorer at the beginning of my sessions and work from there. It looks pretty much the same as in Win 7. I've been able to find where to put the files I saved from Win 7 with all my passwords, bookmarks and email addresses. All the applications that use those run as before.

I'm not thrilled with the photo viewer replacement in this version, but I'll learn to love it with time.

If only I can find a way to go back to using a Microsoft Office that I won't have to rent for the rest of my days, and this particular machine will turn on and stay on, first try, I'd be a big fan of Windows 10.

Check out Libre Office. It's a free Office suite which can handle files created under Windows.

It seems to me that some of the objections to changing to a Linux system centre around the problem of learning a new operating system.

Well you all do seem to have these problems with Windows now and you are paying for it, and you have no control of it's hidden agendas and automatic updates. Remember it's whole purpose is to relieve you of money, not give you a pleasing computing experience. Try Linux.

Maryanne, OpenOffice (put out by Apache, I think) also works with doc and docx files. It's a whole bunch of programs lumped together and works like Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc. It's close enough in how it works that for writing you should have no problem.

There are definitely programs that do photo editing and web pages but as to whether they work the same way or not I can't say. What you could do is load an old computer up with a Linux system and experiment.

To try an operating system, such as Linux Mint Cinnamon (the one that I like) you go to the web page and download the file. Burn it to a DVD and boot up with it. It will run from the DVD. It will be slow because it is running from the DVD but it will give you an idea of what it looks like and how it works.

A couple of years ago, I bought an ASUS tablet. I wanted something smaller than a laptop for accessing internet & e-mail on the road and to use it for playing out music/recorded interviews on my radio show. It was loaded with Windows 8.1 which I hate but it did do the job. When Windows 10 appeared I went for it, keeping the backup option if I didn't like it. Pleasantly surprised to find I was happy with Windows 10! Much more intuitive than 8.1 and all my programmes worked just fine so, in the interests of space economy, deleted the back up option. All was fine for several months until!!!! a couple of weeks ago I lost the ability to play out any audio! Tried all the driver replacement tricks, troubleshooting etc without success then entered into a chat session with a M'soft Techie. He went through all the things I had already tried with the the same success level as me then announced I needed a complete reload of Windows 10! Problem is, I don't. even after deleting all programmes, have sufficient spare hard disk space to do the reload! Only solution seems to be to buy increased hard disk space and get back to them. Might give up and go for Linux!

You don't need to "reload" Win10. The system has recovery options of reset and restore (I think those are the names, I'm typing on the fly, not looking it up as I go). I did what I think was called a "reset" on my neighbor's computer for her when some files were corrupted by malware. The reset allowed a clean re-write of the Win10 files over the existing ones and no data was lost. The restore takes the computer back to square one and you lose all data and installed programs.

Thanks to your assistance, I successfully evaded that pop-up that if you just close the window, proceeds to launch the update -- there was an option there NOT to schedule the change if you follow the menu to a secondary window. But this morning I have a pop-up that does NOT offer any disengage/cancel option -- only change now, change tonight, or set one of six specific dates in future. How do I keep this update from happening -- I guess the answer is Never10 -- or do I need to keep the damn computer turned off and off the internet for the next month?

Here is a two part article about a Windows program called Process Explorer, that you can apparently set up in lieu of Task Manager, and it does more things. IT worked in older versions of Windows and can also be used in 10.

    Part 1:
    https://blog.malwarebytes.org/101/2016/05/process-explorer-an-introduction/

    Part 2:
    https://blog.malwarebytes.org/101/2016/05/process-explorer-part-2/

When Microsoft acquired Sysinternals in 2006, one of the most famous tools it gained was Process Explorer. For Windows operating systems (OS), especially those up to and including Windows 7, Process Explorer is an excellent replacement for Task Manager. It offers a much clearer view of what is going on and has a lot more options. Besides the options the regular Task Manager has to offer, there are a few extra ones that are particularly interesting when you suspect your machine to be infected. We will discuss a few of these below.

    Replace Task Manager

If you would like to replace Task Manager with Process Explorer, it offers an easy way to do this. On the Process Explorer window, under "Options" menu, you will find "Replace Task Manager", which requires Administrator privileges. Using this will open Process Explorer with every call to taskmgr.exe, including the key combination "Ctrl-Alt-Del".

This_PC_World_article endorses Never 10 or GWX Control Panel. I've no personal experience of either.

I have used Process Explorer, though not since Win 7. It's good for finding unwanted processes that are running and stopping them from wasting resources - updaters and quickstarters for example. A bit like speeding up a car by throwing bits away - works if you know what you're doing;)

I run a new MacBook Pro.

I run Win 10 and XP in a virtual machine - both at the same time if required, even with OS X (the Mac) working too.

Frankly, if Win 10 had emerged when Vista appeared, I wouldn't be on a Mac. It's really very good (Win 10). Very stable.

However, if you get used to a Mac, it's unlikely you'd return to Windows (Linux perhaps as that's reliable and robust AND free).

My Mac boots from cold into ready-to-go in about 20 seconds, so you'd have to make your tea first.
