Microsoft just pushed out a big update for Win10 - and a new "people button" appeared in the small tray on the lower right side of the desktop. They are trying to make the Windows platform part of my social media domain - I turned off the people button. I'm sure there are other rude surprises awaiting my discovery.

I run a new MacBook Pro.

I run Win 10 and XP in a virtual machine - both at the same time if required, even with OS X (the Mac) working too.

Frankly, if Win 10 had emerged when Vista appeared, I wouldn't be on a Mac. It's really very good (Win 10). Very stable.

However, if you get used to a Mac, it's unlikely you'd return to Windows (Linux perhaps as that's reliable and robust AND free).

My Mac boots from cold into ready-to-go in about 20 seconds, so you'd have to make your tea first.

This_PC_World_article endorses Never 10 or GWX Control Panel. I've no personal experience of either.

I have used Process Explorer, though not since Win 7. It's good for finding unwanted processes that are running and stopping them from wasting resources - updaters and quickstarters for example. A bit like speeding up a car by throwing bits away - works if you know what you're doing;)

Another useful hack to Windows 10 is God Mode. It basically puts all customization and management options on one page. Very simple to do, just create a new folder (desktop is a good place) and name it this string GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}. More info about it HERE.

Here is a two part article about a Windows program called Process Explorer, that you can apparently set up in lieu of Task Manager, and it does more things. IT worked in older versions of Windows and can also be used in 10.

Part 1:
https://blog.malwarebytes.org/101/2016/05/process-explorer-an-introduction/

Part 2:
https://blog.malwarebytes.org/101/2016/05/process-explorer-part-2/

When Microsoft acquired Sysinternals in 2006, one of the most famous tools it gained was Process Explorer. For Windows operating systems (OS), especially those up to and including Windows 7, Process Explorer is an excellent replacement for Task Manager. It offers a much clearer view of what is going on and has a lot more options. Besides the options the regular Task Manager has to offer, there are a few extra ones that are particularly interesting when you suspect your machine to be infected. We will discuss a few of these below.

Replace Task Manager

If you would like to replace Task Manager with Process Explorer, it offers an easy way to do this. On the Process Explorer window, under "Options" menu, you will find "Replace Task Manager", which requires Administrator privileges. Using this will open Process Explorer with every call to taskmgr.exe, including the key combination "Ctrl-Alt-Del".

Micro$oft is doing it again! I have Win7 and do not intend to migrate to Win10 any time soon. Thanks to your assistance, I successfully evaded that pop-up that if you just close the window, proceeds to launch the update -- there was an option there NOT to schedule the change if you follow the menu to a secondary window. But this morning I have a pop-up that does NOT offer any disengage/cancel option -- only change now, change tonight, or set one of six specific dates in future. How do I keep this update from happening -- I guess the answer is Never10 -- or do I need to keep the damn computer turned off and off the internet for the next month?

You don't need to "reload" Win10. The system has recovery options of reset and restore (I think those are the names, I'm typing on the fly, not looking it up as I go). I did what I think was called a "reset" on my neighbor's computer for her when some files were corrupted by malware. The reset allowed a clean re-write of the Win10 files over the existing ones and no data was lost. The restore takes the computer back to square one and you lose all data and installed programs.

A couple of years ago, I bought an ASUS tablet. I wanted something smaller than a laptop for accessing internet & e-mail on the road and to use it for playing out music/recorded interviews on my radio show. It was loaded with Windows 8.1 which I hate but it did do the job. When Windows 10 appeared I went for it, keeping the backup option if I didn't like it. Pleasantly surprised to find I was happy with Windows 10! Much more intuitive than 8.1 and all my programmes worked just fine so, in the interests of space economy, deleted the back up option. All was fine for several months until!!!! a couple of weeks ago I lost the ability to play out any audio! Tried all the driver replacement tricks, troubleshooting etc without success then entered into a chat session with a M'soft Techie. He went through all the things I had already tried with the the same success level as me then announced I needed a complete reload of Windows 10! Problem is, I don't. even after deleting all programmes, have sufficient spare hard disk space to do the reload! Only solution seems to be to buy increased hard disk space and get back to them. Might give up and go for Linux!

Thanks for the instructions, Stanron,
I'd like to try Linux when (if ever,) I'm not struggling with too many other things that a deteriorating brain has difficulty wrapping itself around.

I returned the Win 10 machine to the shop where I bought it, Monday, and got a refund. It was having serious problems booting. I didn't get another one. For now, I'm using a Win 7 laptop that is able to run all the programs I normally use.

I know nothing about which programs are available to run on Linux. Will it run the programs I use that run on Windows? I'm past 70 and not likely to be able to learn how to use entirely new programs that will perform the various tasks ahead of me, photo editing and web page creation/maintenance among others.

There are definitely programs that do photo editing and web pages but as to whether they work the same way or not I can't say. What you could do is load an old computer up with a Linux system and experiment.

To try an operating system, such as Linux Mint Cinnamon (the one that I like) you go to the web page and download the file. Burn it to a DVD and boot up with it. It will run from the DVD. It will be slow because it is running from the DVD but it will give you an idea of what it looks like and how it works.

LibreOffice and OpenOffice are essentially different versions of the same suite of programs5. Libre is a bit more developed. Open is a bit more stable. Both work in Windows 10.

Thank you, Acme,
I looked for OpenOffice, but couldn't find a version for Windows 10. I looked just now and it appears that OpenOffice 4.1.x will run on it. :)

I'll try that when the 30 day free trial of MS Office 2016 expires.

Maryanne, OpenOffice (put out by Apache, I think) also works with doc and docx files. It's a whole bunch of programs lumped together and works like Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc. It's close enough in how it works that for writing you should have no problem.

Check out Libre Office. It's a free Office suite which can handle files created under Windows.

It seems to me that some of the objections to changing to a Linux system centre around the problem of learning a new operating system.

Well you all do seem to have these problems with Windows now and you are paying for it, and you have no control of it's hidden agendas and automatic updates. Remember it's whole purpose is to relieve you of money, not give you a pleasing computing experience. Try Linux.

After attempting in vain to resuscitate my Win 7 machine, I bought a new Acer with Win 10 factory installed (not an upgrade). I was thrilled when I loaded my old programs, tested them and all worked.

Enter the MS Upgrade Monster. (insert appropriately sinister music here)

The updates appear to be automatic with no provision to prevent them. Now none of my MS Office 2000 applications will respond to a "Save" or "Save as" command. (Yes, I realize that it's a 16 year old program, but it worked fine on Win 7 and also worked fine on Win 10 before MS installed an upgrade that apparently blocks it.)

MS has kindly allowed me a 30 day trial of Office 2016 which they will gladly rent to me for the paltry sum of $10/month.

Other than that, and that this machine seems to have issues staying turned on, first try, in the day, (Yes, I turned off all power saving options), I'm pleasantly surprised at how painless it was to switch to Win 10 from Win 7.

I open the File Explorer at the beginning of my sessions and work from there. It looks pretty much the same as in Win 7. I've been able to find where to put the files I saved from Win 7 with all my passwords, bookmarks and email addresses. All the applications that use those run as before.

I'm not thrilled with the photo viewer replacement in this version, but I'll learn to love it with time.

If only I can find a way to go back to using a Microsoft Office that I won't have to rent for the rest of my days, and this particular machine will turn on and stay on, first try, I'd be a big fan of Windows 10.

Several months after my problems, I'm becoming aware that some users are reporting success after flash updating Bios for Lenovo Win 8.1 [bing] PCs,

It's annoying, because I really wanted it to work and like it, and bought the PC at bargain price specifically for the purpose..

My initial feelings after cautious installation and making it look as much like XP as possible,
was it aint too bad..

Then the problems started.... 😬

Reading around google, it looks like a Lenovo systems incompatibility, affecting more than my one product...

The part of me that like's getting expensive stuff for free is still indecisive at the impending deadline,
but the part of me that wasted the best part of a week trying to repair a brand new PC which was ruined by installing Win 10 is remaining very wary...

Even after reverting back to Win 8.1 and using the onboard Lenovo '1 click' rescue to mop up remaining problems,
it still has corrupt system files which Lenovo phone service technician says
"is probably the best I can expect due to compatibility problems
with the OEM system and registration key coded on the Bios chip
and Win 10".

I've about 6 windows devices that are eligible for Win 10,
and still wondering which ones to risk if I can find the time before it's too late to 'benefit' from the free 'upgrade'...???

I stuck my Office 2002 CD-ROMS in my Windows 10 laptop and it worked. I have Word and I don't pay. I'd bought a new laptop with Windows 8 three years ago, took one look at all those incomprehensible tiles and put the bloody thing away until last month. My old, venerable Vista laptop churns valiantly on. Once I knew that Windows 10 was going to cost me money after July, I thought I'd better bite the bullet. The upgrade from 8, via 8.1 first, was painless. Everything works, it was easy to install free Avast, my Audio Cleaning Lab works, it's great. And, wonder of wonders, the battery on the Samsung laptop that had lain derelict for three years is as good as new. All I have to do now is teach meself how to use Windows 10. It looks friendly to me. What's not to like? 🙂

http://www.cnet.com/how-to/5-reasons-to-upgrade-to-windows-10-right-now/

You can change your mind

If you upgrade to Windows 10 and decide that the new operating system isn't for you, you have 30 days to roll back to your older version of Windows. And by upgrading once -- even if you downgrade later -- you'll have secured the free Windows 10 license for future upgrades. In other words, you can upgrade to Windows 10, roll back to your old operating system, and then you'll still be able to upgrade to Windows for free after July 29.

Good to know.

Mr. Red, your software problem was moved over here because of all of the operating system questions coming up with the Win OS versions updating to 10. It may have been precipitate - what is the OS you are using, and what changes have you made lately?

Did you look to see what features of the computer itself might not work with the new OS? For example, I have a Sony Vaio and they put out an alert about certain models that might not have use of some devices (or cards) with Win10.

There is also a known issue with older software. You may need to uninstall and reinstall the software (Smartaudio HD) or see if there is an updated version of it.

You have 30 days to decide to keep Win 10 or revert back, so do all of your testing now and decide to keep it or not. After 30 days you can't go back.

I upgraded my computer to Windows 10 (a mistake if I may say so) and ever since the sound coming through my speakers and headphones have been buzzing and glitching. I'm also having the same symptoms when digitizing LPs using a turntable plugged into the USB port.

I've looked online for solutions, but none have worked so far.

I'm running Conexant Smartaudio HD and the driver is current for my machine (Toshiba Satellite C655).

Anyone having similar issues? Any solutions beyond "Buy a new machine"?

Subject: Tech: Possible Micr$oft Office update issue
From: Mr Red
Date: 10 May 16 - 09:00 AM

Just spotted a problem with my webpages, sorted now. I generate HTML in VBA from a spreadsheet.

The diagnosis was a change in the behaviour of Excel (who knows what else) and the solution was to include re-calculates (aka F9) at strategic points in my software.

Because macros can flip between pages and spreadsheets you would see a lot of flashing which even for non-epileptics is disconcerting so I switch off window refresh. This has sufficed for 15 years until about a day ago. Maybe the second round of updates today has put the function back to what it was. Who knows? I sorted the problem before Micro$oft so my solution stays where it is!

The message is - if things start becoming odd - hit F9.

I downloaded the software that is at the equivalent level of the OS that was in my machine. I had purchased a laptop with some mild version of Win 8 and purchased the full-octane version at work (at universities we get software at a deep discount). Upgraded to the heavy duty Win8, then Win 8.1 came along and I did that upgrade. I figured out more or less how to use it, but there was a crash a while back and the Microsoft tech in India couldn't get the 64bit version to operate so loaded and ran the 32bit version. My machine was crammed full of old OS files by this time and since it is a SSD device it didn't have that much room to begin with.

I had to uninstall a few things and then I did the Win 10 upgrade. Once I determined it was working I simply cleaned the disk and used the appropriate button to remove the old OS files. While I was at it I compressed the contents of the disk, so I've cleared a lot out one way or another. If I do this on the desktop (it runs Win7, and runs very well, also the ultimate version) I won't bail on the old software in a hurry.

The upgrade and the clearing of old OS didn't take more than a couple of hours, but the compression took many hours. Overnight and into this afternoon.

This is helpful, thanks Andrew. My neighbor has a laptop that can act like a tablet and it periodically offers to go into tablet mode, something she doesn't handle well. There is an icon in the lower right of the touch screen, or when you swipe from the lower right from the edge, it appears, and you can resume the laptop mode.

Well, FWIW, I let the Windoze 10 update go through a couple of months ago, to see how it works, and I've not had any problems so far. I'm using MS Office 2003 without problems, I've still got Media Player and Movie Maker here, all my old freeware photo manipulation program(me)s still work, the only thing I had trouble with was Acrobat Reader, so I replaced it with a Freeware .pdf reader which works fine.

Seems W10 has two modes, Desktop which works much like W7, and Tablet which works much like W8. On my desktop, it reasonably enough works in Desktop mode, but on the laptop, which is a touch-screen jobbie, it kept trying to switch to Tablet mode til we found how to tell it not to. (Don't ask, I can't remember now. At least I know it can be done, so I'll find it again if I need to). I use Firefox as my browser and third party email progs, so I don't know about MS's versions - my old progs work as normal and most of the time I could still be on W7 for most of the things I do. So, no problems.

Oh, and I also use IObit's Advanced System Care, which turns off a lot of the insecurities and reporting functions, and also prevents downloads from changing my default homepage and search engine, which seems like a Good Thing.

I'm sure all of these things have their downsides, but hey - we're getting a hell of a lot of function for 'free'. If you're not paying for the product, you ARE the product.

Andrew

Let's see how it acts compared to Explorer.

Condolences on Edge - you're probably stuck with Bing for everything until you reset your preferences.

After much Sturm und Drang I consulted with a friend who knows more than I. We rescued the Win 10 key just in case and did a complete, clean reinstall. It seems to be working as it should have from the beginning. Only time will tell. It even installed Microsoft Edge on the Taskbar.

Joe, the Search the web and Windows button is also dead [or anaesthetized]. I have been trying various workarounds with no luck.

There was a big update this week, my laptop looks to be perched on the edge of having Win10 installed with or without my participation. I need to either get rid of those updates or be prepared to tell it what I don't want - the "typical" install takes the computer completely into Microsoft's control with a MS email, logon, and Cortana and it's ilk in control, search via Bing, etc. You have to do a custom install and still you need to remove a lot of bloat MS adds.

I got W10 "without asking for it" (although I could have inadvertently pressed a button to be put in the queue for the download).
My webcam doesn't work now but otherwise W10 seems fine.

You like Windows 10?

How about doing a time warp to WIN98?

This little "Raspberry Pi" is a neophyte controllers wet dream come true.

Most of have underused screens, keyboards, a plethora of mice.

For 35 USD this tiny module ... offers a "Pandora's Box" of opportunity....and... as it is manufacturered in Wales...you support the stumbling UK economy

If it were not for socialism....the UK might be the world's most powerful economy.

When I was still on Windows 7 I kept getting pop-up messages that my free upgrade to Windows 10 was available: it invited me to click for more info: however, when I did this, it tried to start downloading Windows 10: sneaky or what? Maybe explains how some others suddenly found they'd got it without really asking for it.
Eventually, I chose my time and took it, but not yet convinced that it's an improvement!

Re PCs being upgraded and the user didn't know how it was done... if you are set to automatically receive and install (recommended settind), it will happen. If you are set to be notified that updates are available or choose to check updates manually and view them, you will see under Optional Updates that W10 has been preselected for you by M$. Rather nice of them, eh? I always check.

It's not difficult to update the BIOS. But it's important to get the update for the correct model. THIS is for an E50-00 - but there are other E50s.

To see what's involved, download the 'BIOS Update Readme' document.

I see messages from Sony about updating before I upgrade to Win10 on my Vaio laptop. They did the same thing before the upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1. I'm going to go ahead and upgrade the laptop, first, and figure out the bugs before approaching my office computer.
