I always thought that the poem "Rule Britannia" was written first then it was put to music by Arne!

They are both obviously tunes that were written before the words so there are similarities in the dynamics - short words are elongated and long words sometimes staccatoed

Both very difficult to sing

I had number one hits in Norway with both

'Star-Spangled Banner' is in 3/4 time. 'Rule Britannia' is in 4/4 time. They are both patriotic songs - beyond that, I don't see or hear any link.

I just refreshed my memory on both tunes, and I don't hear any similarity, Mick. Sorry

Is it only me who hears similarities in the airs used for the two patriotic songs?
According to wiki, the Star-Spangled Banner tune was based on John Stafford Smith's air for "The Anacreontic Song ", the official song of the Anacreontic Society ( an 18th-century gentlemen's club of amateur musicians named after the 6 century BC Greek court poet Anacreon).

The Anacreontic Song's tune was later used by writers as a setting for patriotic lyrics. The song became popular in Britain and also America following the establishment of several Anacreontic Societies there.
