Warmest (or least cold) nights I can remember at a NFF in Canberra.
Some pretty hot music too....
Now back to reality...    :-(

I'm currently sorting my photos & will be publishing relevant pics on the Bush Music Club blog.

Hymn session pics are sorted & I'll send them to you as they are not really relevant to BMC - tho some do show members ...

Well another National Folk Festival is over,

Its been great catching up with Jennie, Sandra and other Ozcatter's, as well as friends from the Bush Music Club and all the Dancers from Sydney

Really enjoyed the Sunday Hymn singing despite the shocking venue. As per usual the Bush Music Club there, teaching our upcoming musicians. the Shanty sessions both by Roaring Forties and the Redfern Shanty Club were fun, pity I wasn't able to attend the stairwell singing as I have always enjoyed them.

The last singing session at the Terrace had quite a few Ozcatter's attendance.

See you all next time.

Bruce D

Even better, no boozy singers falling over guy ropes at 2 O'clock in the morning or someone starting to practice for a set early in the morning and no bloody drummers !!

no queues for the loo, and a bathroom floor that's dry.

Any way bags are packed, car is loaded, fueled and washed. ready for a 05.30 start in the morning.

2 sleeps to go and a eight and a half hour road trip, to Canberra, so expect me late afternoon on Thursday.

Camping out in Style at a 5 star Hotel, this year.

Himself and I are already in Canberra, set up at Exhibition Park - weather is cool, days are partly cloudy. I've already done some of my volunteer shifts. Program looks interesting, with several concerts and presentations harking back to festivals of years gone by.

I'll be leaving Brisbane on Monday, planning to arrive Canberra by Wednesday arvo. Whether or not I actually meet anybody this year will depend again on how lost I get in the program.

thankyou, anon guest!

2016 program

Themes & Presentations including

SONGS OF REEDY RIVER — BUSH MUSIC CLUB Most of the songs used in the iconic Australian musical play Reedy River, about the aftermath of the Shearers Strike of 1891, were first collected by Bush Music Club members. Songbooks will be provided. (I'll be there, singing along & taking pics)

SONGWRITERS' CONCERT — THE FIRST NFF TO THE FUTURE The concert looks back at songwriters from the first NFF (Glen Tomasetti, Don Henderson, Harry Robertson, Phyl Vinnicombe (Lobl), Ken Mansell and Clem Parkinson), revisits some prominent songs from subsequent NFFs and looks forward with ideas for songwriting.

WASN'T THAT A TIME — PHYL LOBL AND FRIENDS Phyl Lobl — a significant songwriter and presenter, and Margret RoadKnight — one of the country's top interpreters of song, are both well known to festival audiences and were both performers at the first National Folk Festival in 1967. They join voices with others to relate the zeitgeist of the time and pay homage to the ideals and the work of those who created the National Folk Festival.

THE WLL-TRAVELLED 'WILD ROVER', — BRIAN PETERS Brian Peters explains, with live performance, slides and recordings, the history of the famous song 'Wild Rover', composed in England in the 17th century. He explores the importance of the song's Australian history in developing the song we know today.

SING OUT FOR JUSTICE! — MARGRET ROADKNIGHT In the tradition of the first National Folk Festival, Sing Out for Justice is a forum to lift voices and spirits by joining in on stirring songs from various social justice campaigns (many from the pages of Sing Out! and sung by the 'Pied Piper' Pete Seeger).

One day, we'll manage the trek again. Never fear.

Cheers

some years back I had a chance to win 2 tickets to NFF & wondered what I'd do with them if I won as everyone I knew had tickets.

If I ever have a chance to win 2 tickets again, they are yours!

Anyway,

Baring unforeseen issues (medical or otherwise), I will be coming.

Leave applied for, Hotel booked, and the car is being prepared.

Looking forward to, the shanties groups, and hearing groups like "All My Exes Live in Texas" and "Bloodwood" as well as performers like "Sian Evens" and "Kristina Olsen", along with all my favourites from the Bush Music Club, "Roaring Forties" etc

The problem will be managing to get to all the venues, without walking to long.

well, I was planning to leave it for a day or 2, but with BruceD saying It's time! here it is.

So, who will be there & the perennial question, where do we meet?

It's the 50th National, so there are lots of celebrations happening.

As I wrote on 50 years of the Australian National Folk Festival my good friend Phyl Lobl was involved with the first & is re-creating several concerts.

Trocadero Fri 1.40 - 2.40 Wasn't that a time? Phyl Lobl & friends

Budawang - Sat 2-3.40, Founder's concert - cast includes Phyl Lobl & Margaret RoadKnight

Trocadero - Sun 11.20 - 1.10 Songwriter's concert - Revisiting the First NFF & it's impact on the future

Her good friend Margaret RoadKnight is also involved, as is the Victorian Folk Music Club (founded in 1959 as the Bush Music Club)
-----------

Sydney's Bush Music Club has a full program -

Songs workshop -
Saturday Night Carnival - Carnival Stage, 5-6pm Songs of Reedy River

tunes workshop - Waltz-a-thon Part 2, The Terrace, Sunday, 7-9pm, all musicians welcome

4 daily Saplings workshops for young musicians 8-16 years + one 30 min concert for these performers.
Billy Moran tent, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday - 11.30 to 12.30

Performance - Central Park - Monday - 3.30 to 4pm.
------------------

Sunday 9.30, Billy Moran Tent (not the best venue for a singing session)
Community Hymn singing with Hrothgar & his beautiful assistants - his lovely wife Anne, JennieG & me! Best singing session in the whole festival.

------------------

I'll be at every singing session possible, including the late night sessions, especially the shanty sessions with the Redfern Shanty Club an amazingly energetic group of under 30s!

------------------

UK Catter Brian Peters will also be there.
