Subject: RE: Buxton sessions From: GUEST,Ray Date: 06 Mar 17 - 09:34 AM There's a session in Bradwell on the 13th but it's a long walk back to Buxton! |
Subject: RE: Buxton sessions From: Jack Campin Date: 05 Mar 17 - 08:23 PM OK, I'm going to be back there the week after next, 12/13/14 March. Anything happening that doesn't need a car to get to? |
Subject: RE: Buxton sessions From: Stu Date: 19 Aug 16 - 04:11 AM Oh for the heady days of the brilliant session at The George, Britannia and Watson's. We had some great times in Buxton over the years. |
Subject: RE: Buxton sessions From: GUEST,Bloke in Groucho mask Date: 19 Aug 16 - 04:01 AM Since when did they worry about which key they were in? Used to be a crackin' singers night at The Devonshire Arms on the A6 just south of Buxton. Been a few years since I went last, mind. No idea if it still exists. A bloke called Gerry? used to run it. I left Derbyshire to its fate back in 2009. |
Subject: RE: Buxton sessions From: FreddyHeadey Date: 18 Aug 16 - 06:32 PM The Poachers, Hope, looked closed up when I passed in July 2016. And the fb page isn't available. |
Subject: RE: Buxton sessions From: GUEST,Ray Date: 11 Mar 16 - 04:03 PM I'll check to see if any of the usual suspects have heard about what's going on. |
Subject: RE: Buxton sessions From: FreddyHeadey Date: 11 Mar 16 - 12:48 PM Ray... you surely don't mean you won't go to a pub if it can be proved they have a Facebook page ;-) !? ...but that's why I put the info in the text, it doesn't mention a time, just 'every Wednesday'. A fiddle a sax and a trumpet in their photo.... I don't think they know who will be turning up yet. Maybe they're hoping to mop up anyone who doesn't like the Old Hall. |
Subject: RE: Buxton sessions From: GUEST,Ray Date: 11 Mar 16 - 11:22 AM Aaah.... Face-tube! Won't be going there then! |
Subject: RE: Buxton sessions From: FreddyHeadey Date: 11 Mar 16 - 05:18 AM Found a Facebook page now for the Poachers(new management...) Poachers, Hope, Bring your gear, play your stuff,. Jam Session every Wednesday |
Subject: RE: Buxton sessions From: FreddyHeadey Date: 09 Mar 16 - 08:32 PM (...could I suggest a separate thread for definining musicians/tuningskill,/keys... etc.. thread.cfm?threadid=159434 ?) Thanks GuestRay & BanjoRay. idk about the Poachers Arms http://www.folkandblues.club seems to be still on at the Old Hall "... Folk, Blues & Beyond uses the tea rooms at The Old Hall Hotel once a month presenting well known or up and coming artists. Acoustic sessions will be held in the [Old Hall] hotel bar..." Just for the record.... 2016 9 Mar - Singers & Musicians 23 Mar - Singers & Musicians 13 Apr - Singers & Musicians 24 Apr - Sarah McQuaid 27 Apr - Singers & Musicians 15 May- Paul Pearson -Rob Lowdon - Chris McMahon and Ceri Ashton |
Subject: RE: Buxton sessions From: GUEST,Ray Date: 09 Mar 16 - 11:55 AM Ray - I understand the reason for it, I just don't get being able to call yourself a musician and only playing in one key. As for alternative tunings, I've always said that I'll start using different ones when I've exhausted all possibilities with the normal one. I drove past the Poachers (Hope - some people live in Hope!) and they are advertising a Wednesday "jam session". Does anyone know anything about it? Perhaps it has moved from the Old Hall? |
Subject: RE: Buxton sessions From: BanjoRay Date: 08 Mar 16 - 06:50 PM The Bakewell session where they "frowned on you if you didn't play in that night's chosen key" was an Old Time session where the fiddlers and banjo players have to re-tune their instruments to change key and keep the right sound. This session is now on a Thursday night in the Queens Arms. They mostly play fiddle tunes, with a few songs, all American Old Time. Everyone's welcome if you stick to those rules! There is no difficulty with staying in one key as the participants could play for a week without repeating themselves.... Ray |
Subject: RE: Buxton sessions From: FreddyHeadey Date: 08 Mar 16 - 12:58 PM Thanks Ray. |
Subject: RE: Buxton sessions From: GUEST,Ray Date: 08 Mar 16 - 10:47 AM Freddy - Only been on the guest nights (to play) in recent years. The Bradwell session is at The Bowling Green on the first Monday of the month (usually). Anything goes and newcomers are always welcome but it would be ruined if it got too popular; if you get my drift. There used to be a session in Bakewell - no longer in The Manners - and they frowned at you if you didn't play in that night's chosen key! |
Subject: RE: Buxton sessions From: FreddyHeadey Date: 08 Mar 16 - 06:41 AM Ray, Club Acoustic is 1st & 3rd Weds plus a guest when there is a 5th Wednesday.( details on the 07 Mar 16 - 08:15 link above ) Bradwell... Ray, was this instrumental/singing? Do you remember the pub?... Frequency? ...and are they happy for others to know about it? ? The White Hart Inn ? / |
Subject: RE: Buxton sessions From: Ian Hendrie Date: 08 Mar 16 - 05:00 AM I'd be interested in knowing about any sessions in Buxton to add to the Pyramid Folk Hub which covers this local area. |
Subject: RE: Buxton sessions From: GUEST,Ray Date: 08 Mar 16 - 04:19 AM The main session in Buxton is Club Acoustic which takes place on certain Wednesdays at the Old Clubhouse (the watering-hole next door to the Opera House). I've not been to one of their regular sessions for at least a decade a decade so I can't tell you which ones. There are many sessions in the surrounding sticks (went to one last night in Bradwell) but you'll need to be prepared to travel. |

Subject: Buxton sessions From: Jack Campin Date: 07 Mar 16 - 06:21 PM Information about sessions in Buxton (Derbyshire) is typically hard to find. I'm there at the moment. The entry in traditionalmusic.co.uk lists two defunct ones, one with Chris Rockcliffe as a contact - he died in 2008. Anyway, tonight I found a dead friendly bluegrass/Americana/English session, just before closing time. The Ale Stop, first Monday of the month. The licence is only till 10pm (it's an odd hole-in-the-wall place that looks like it would be more at home in Bulgaria) so I suppose it starts early. |
