Agreed! Kind of a shock.   He made some amazing music.....exciting rhythms, interesting harmonies and textures. Sad to lose him.

This is another artist with a work ethic. His personal life could be a big ugly mess, but his work was immaculate. The real artistic measure of this man is what his peers made of him, and look at all the cover versions of his songs. I guess he did it his way....and I'll leave it at that.

Many were reporting two years ago that he was HIV.

After he rejected modern medical treatment, and drew near to alternative therapy...the "hype" of 4/20 laid another body low, low, low.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

A little off topic but re that video in which Prince played inducting George Harrison into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: out of all the songs they could've chosen from Harrison's oeuvre, why pick a song that features Eric Clapton on all the instrumental breaks? Just seems strange. It would've been a nice touch at least had Clapton been there to preform those solos in person.

Prince was creative and innovative--a huge musical talent. He will not be forgotten.

He was a good 'un.

Re that video I always wondered what happened to his guitar. At the end of the song he threw it straight up over his head and it never came down.

My wife was into him big time.
At first i dismissed Prince as just another Michael Jackson clone..
until I started listening properly to his LPs.
Then for most of the late 80s to mid 90s he was the most important influence in my music life.
He's one of those artists whose B sides were superior to most other's A sides..

Weekends at Camden Market hunting expensive rare bootleg CDs became an absolute necessity...
just to feed an addiction for consistently astonishing good music that Prince perversely refused to release...

Suddenly dropping dead at 57 brings it a bit too close to home... I'm 57... 😬

Should I be embarrassed to say that I know absolutely nothing about him or his music? And am I alone? (I'm absolutely not trying to turn ignorance into a brag, by the way).

I didn't recognise the full name but I knew of him as "Prince"

"Purple Rain" and "When Doves Cry" are the only songs of his I can remember and really liked but I don't follow (I suppose) "Pop music"

Steve.. it's a bit of a cliche in press reports.. but actually quite accurate..

Prince is described as a combination of the best bits of Jimi Hendrix / Little Richard / James Brown..

to which I'd at least add.. Marc Bolan & Sly Stone [Sly & the Family Stone]

Well, I'm sure we'll hear a lot more. It's all over today's Guardian. Incidentally, Marc Bolan was killed fifty yards from where I lived when I was at university, a few years later I hasten to add. I went to the roadside shrine recently and the proximity made me shudder.

Steve, I heard other artists cover his songs before I heard Prince himself.

Have you never heard Sinead O'Connor, "Nothing Compares 2 U?" That's by Prince.

So is "Stand Back" covered by Stevie Nicks.

Some of us have not paid much attention to pop music for the past thirty-forty years. No disrespect intended.

I'm no fan of Sinead I'm afraid. On the whole, I think that art should be about the art, not the artist. Not that some background isn't good. I want some transcendence in my art. I also like it to be life-affirming, even when it deals with tragedy. I only come this way once. That's just me.

I find it amazing that, although usually when someone dies, you hear all these sordid stories, with Prince, you hear about all the secret good deeds that he told people not to talk about.

Perhaps because right from his earliest days he shamelessly promoted his public persona as a boasting sex obsessed libertine...

Not much point in the press trying to dig up dirt on him,
as his sexual obsessions and appetites were very much the foundation of his creativity....

Though it's not stopped UK tabloids going into gleeful overdrive raking up lurid stories on alleged prescription painkiller addiction.

At some point he became a Jehova's Witness and spent time studying the bible. The press even mentioned a few stories of people who had him call to the house to 'talk about Jesus'. That must have had some bearing on his spiritual outlook. There's also an emphasis on 'living clean', in other words, he avoided alcohol and other drugs.

Other Prince songs recorded by other people:

Chaka Khan recorded "I Feel For You"

The Bangles recorded "(just another) Manic Monday" ("wish it were Sunday...")

"She wants to lead a glamorous life / Without love it ain't much..." Sheila E
