Don't be confused like I was a moment ago...there's a music thread with Benny Lynch in the title. That is a deceased songwriter and performer of traditional Irish music.

The recent death of Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali put me in mind of Benny Lynch from, was it, the Gorbals? who became a world-famous boxer, and then died miserably in his '30s.

In the last year or two, the press have regularly reported on the movement to erect a memorial statue to Benny Lynch in his native city.

I know there is a song about Benny Lynch. I'm going to start this thread in the non-music section, however I leave its placement to the discretion of moderators and fellow members.

As reported by Catriona Stewart for the Evening Times, an exhibition was recently opened honoring Benny Lynch. It turned out that one of Lynch's two trophies did not go to auction, but was given to the city of Glasgow. So the Open Museum arranged the exhibition to be located first in Glasgow, at Gorbals Library, where it will be until September of this year; then the exhibit is to travel beyond the city I guess, don't know where. The other trophy had been acquired at auction by a private citizen, who agreed to loan the trophy to the exhibition so as to reunite the two.

There was the contemporary verse of "I'm Popeye"
I'm Popeye the sailor man
I live in a caravan
I eat a' my mince and beat Benny Lynch
I'm Popeye the sailor man.

OR I eat all my spinach and beat Benny Lynch

While blue-clicky links are one of the many things I fail at doing, I can provide the URL to the campaign for a Glasgow statue of Benny Lynch.
