Subject: Archie Roach at The Fringe From: Gallus Moll Date: 12 Aug 16 - 07:45 PM The amazing singer / songwriter Archie Roach is performing at The Spiegeltent, St Andrews Square on Tuesday and Wednesday 16th/17th August 19.45 at the Edinburgh Fringe. He is part of the month long Made in Adelaide showcase (The Adelaide Festival Fringe is the second largest in the world) I am so disappointed I cannot attend - I saw Archie at WOMAD in 2011 and was blown away. He really is tremedous, very moving - go and see him if you can. |
Subject: RE: Archie Roach at The Fringe From: GUEST,gecko Date: 12 Aug 16 - 11:51 PM If you've been lucky enough to see 'Tracker', an Australian film staring David Gulpilil as the Aboriginal Tracker and Gary Sweet as the despicable Pommie Police Sergeant, you would have heard Archie Roach. He sings the amazing soundtrack song. YIU gecko |
Subject: RE: Archie Roach at The Fringe From: Effsee Date: 13 Aug 16 - 04:34 AM The film's title is "The Tracker", not to be confused with the film "Tracker"...two entirely different films. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tracker Sorry , can't do the blue clicky thing. :( |

Subject: RE: Archie Roach at The Fringe From: Helen Date: 13 Aug 16 - 04:39 PM Aaah, the great and wonderful Australian national treasures, Archie Roach and his late wife, Ms Hunter!! Both very special people in Oz. I love his Charcoal Lane album, which I've been listening to since it came out 25 years ago. I bought the 25th year anniversary copy last year too too - just to celebrate. Mr Roach has a way with words. He can cram so much experience into deceptively simple lyrics and melodies. His song called Took the Children Away started a cultural revolution in Oz. It tells in personal terms about the white Australian practice of taking Indigenous/Aboriginal children away from their families - "for their own good" - and placing them in Christian mission homes or adopting them out to white families. (Sometimes I am so ashamed to be white in this country.) One of my favourite Archie Roach songs is called I Lied. It's a love song, or a love-gone-wrong song. It's beautiful. I could go on and on. If you can go to the Fringe to see him, do it! If not, look him up on the 'net, watch the videos, buy the CD's. Helen |
Subject: RE: Archie Roach at The Fringe From: Gallus Moll Date: 13 Aug 16 - 07:26 PM Thanks for this Helen -- I had never heard of Archie Roach till I visited my college friend in SA a few years ago, they took me to WOMAD and Archie was one of the performers - it not long after his wife/partner had died, they had an empty chair on the stage for her. Later that evening he was interviewed in a more intimate setting with a Q&A to follow; we got a chance to learn more of this great and passionate man, his songs, his culture - - and his connection to Scotland! I wish I had known about him years ago - - and I wish he was over here for longer that the two Fringe performances. I think he has been at L'Orient, don't know if there are any other gigs / festivals in this part of the world? really hope he returns some day. |
Subject: RE: Archie Roach at The Fringe From: Gallus Moll Date: 14 Aug 16 - 12:29 PM OK I've rearranged my diary - realised I just could not miss the chance to hear Archie in concert again (and it's a lot easier than going all the way back to Australia -- !) Got myself a ticket for Wednesday, hooray! Really looking forward to it. |

Subject: RE: Archie Roach at The Fringe From: Helen Date: 16 Aug 16 - 03:21 PM Well, Gallus Moll, I've never been out of Oz, partly because there is so much to see here and I decided a long time ago that I wanted to see Oz before I looked elsewhere. I still haven't been to Western Australia or the top end of Northern Territory or Queensland - they are on my list - but other than that I've been to some great places. Helen |
