Hi, I was mentioned above. Graham Peddie warden at Tanners Hatch youth hostel who retired in 1998 died on 6 May 2021. The Tanners Hatch 70th would have been 2017. Not sure if it went ahead. The next celebratory year could be 75 years in 2022. I am currently dusting off all the material I have about TH and sent info to the Dorking Advertiser who are doing an article about Graham this week.

Graham Peddy it was.

Stayed there a few times. Even did the Tanners Marathon. I was part of Brighton YHA Group and a keen cyclist - that was in the 1960s.

I'd sure love to be there if I could. Got lotsa memories, but no recordings or photos, I'm afraid. Also, too many of the people I remember from there are no longer with us - it was in the hostel's gaslight-&-firelight era, the pre-electric days of Graham - what was his surname? Petty? Too lazy to trek over to the other thread and look it up. (Though really, it would be a good idea to find and link that to this one.) Graham had a wife & some kiddies - will any of them be there? Keep us posted!

Tanners Hatch Youth Hostel in the Surrey hills celebrates its 70th birthday this September.
Tanners has been a great friend of folk music for many years.

Tanners 70th

Come and celebrate this very special place and the 70 years of fun and frolics that changed our lives

9-11th September

Save the date

To book a bed or a camping spot, contact Andy Baillie, the Tanners Hostel Warden, Tel 01306 877964, tanners@yha.org.uk. We expect the hostel to be full so don't

What to expect
To celebrate 70 years of Tanners there will be all manner of classic Tanners activities, from wood collecting and blackberry picking to orienteering and games of "hunt the generator". A mini Night Hike, nature walk and conservation work through to a special performance of self-penned songs and poems for the occasion.
There will be a ceilidh, a quiz, a cream tea and of course, a traditional Tanners folk night with our favourite MC, Sean.

To capture all those Tanners experiences, there will be a Listening Project – come to the listening booth and record your tales from Tanners. Bring your old photos, old recordings, and Tanners memorabilia.

The big ASKS:
1. Bring or send memorabilia and old photos. Did you dig the pit? Paint the chimney? Drink tea? Have you still got the photo? Jenny Neal has offered to pull them all together into a mega album but for now (until we've had a chance to ask Jenny) send your memorabilia to Jennie Blackburn at jennie@theglade.net along with as much detail as you remember, especially the date and any names.

2. Write a song or a poem, paint a painting or weave that tapestry - any manner of creative artistry to celebrate 70 years of Tanners. (talk to Nod nodontheroad@gmail.com )

3. Bring your memories and record your reminiscences for posterity in the Listening Booth! You don't need to prepare notes or research dates. Just come and talk. But from experience, Donna says some people feel more comfortable having a few notes. Bringing mementos or photos to the booth is probably better than notes. Any queries, do contact Donna at donnakleigh@btinternet.com (Note: Rest assured that no material will be made public without permissions from those involved!)

4. Please make contact with people or else send contact details to Lorna at lornajh@blueyonder.co.uk . "Who do you still speak to who went to Tanners? Did Tanners have an impact on their lives that others would like to hear about? Could you dig out your old style address book and find them again? (parents/children might still be at the old address!)"

5. We need help! Can you help with:
a. food preparation
b. sound recording
c. digital skills for creating an online Tanners 70th collection with photos, recordings, stories and recollections
d. help as a Listener on the Listening Project (got any oral history or journalism skills (or aspirations?)

There will be all sorts of other help requests so please do just offer! Massive thanks to all those people who have already offered help.

Splott Man
