Just had an alert that the aurora may be visible from anywhere in the UK this evening. It's nice and balmy here in Cornwall so I shall be lighting a mozzie coil and cracking a bottle open.

Let's hope it is. Never seen it myself despite a good few visits northward.

I will be in Alta for a few days mid March next year. No doubt I won't see them then either :(

Last night while I was out and about with my pup, I saw a glimmer on the mountain top- I don't know if in time it developed fully, but it seems likely. Still awfully close to the full moon though so it may be that the lights wouldn't have shown up very well.

Here in southeastern Alaska I've seen Northern Lights in every month except in June and July when the sky is just too light, about the color of stone-washed jeans.

Mr Red what the hell are you alerting about. There was no Solar mass ejection. Besides a red aurora is rare. However there may be a gamma ray burster headed t

As we here in Cornwall are a mere 50 degrees north, an aurora is a rare treat. The only one I've ever seen was at the end of October 2003 which was spectacular. There was a good show a couple of Augusts ago, and I knew it was on the cards, but I gave up on it at 1am. Dammit all, it came good at about 2am, after I'd hit the sack. One of my mates, who happens to be a professional photographer, stayed up all night and took some beautiful pics of the light show over the breakwater at Bude. I have one framed at the top of my stairs, a cracking good picture.

Jeri I was making a joke about getting it all wrong and then perishing in gamma rays generated by a black hole.

I would do a lot more Gilda Radner humor but people would have your reaction not knowing the Litella character.

So let me just this once explain my post.

Radner's character Litella worked like this; Litella became increasingly agitated as her statement progressed. Midway in her commentary, it became apparent that she had misheard and/or misunderstood the subject of the editorial to which she was responding.

A typical example:
What is all this fuss I hear about the Supreme Court decision on a "deaf" penalty? It's terrible! Deaf people have enough problems as it is!

The news anchor interrupted Litella to point out her error, along the lines, "That's death penalty, Ms. Litella, not deaf ... death."[4] Litella would wrinkle her nose, say, "Oh, that's very different...."

then meekly turn to the camera and say, "Never mind." When Litella played against news anchor Chevy Chase (whom she often called "Cheddar Cheese" he was somewhat sympathetic to her. But when Jane Curtin took over the anchor role, she scolded Litella, "Every week you come on and you get it wrong," to which Litella

replied, "Bitch!"

So now you know. We are expected to know all about Monty Python, now you know about classic SNL.

Thank you Jeri you ignorant slut.

Yikes...

I did sit up until three in the morning two weeks ago, on a reclining chair on a mirador in Almería province in Andalucía, Rioja by my side, 25 degrees, watching the Perseids in perfect darkness. We didn't get the hundred per hour that were predicted but we saw a really good show. I had a lie-in next day.

You have certainly studied the Proximus Centauri news about planet Proximus B.

If the planet has a great magnetic field and liquid water the kind of intelligent life there would evolve very large eyes to see in the low light of a dwarf red star.   Ring any bells?

At half the speed of light the journey would only take a dozen years or so.

PS
for fun google; Jane you ignorant slut.
Its an American classic.

This was a good year for comet watchers with two comet in the southern hemisphere. One was the closest in a 100 years and the other was a diatonic carbon green color.

When there is a visible comet in the north is unclear.          intens
