It would be well to specify the tune. Few if any hymns have been set to so many as this one.

According to W. H. Auden, naughty boys in his generation sang

While shepherds watched their flocks by night,
All s******* on the ground,
An angel of the Lord came down
And handed paper round.

He & his brother loved it.

We always used the tune "Winchester Old" for singing "While shepherds washed their socks by night".

But in recent years I have often sung the "real" words to the tune of Gillie Gillie Ossenfeffer.
