When I see things like "Award-winning record producer Andy Bell will be the sound engineer for the production" I start to worry whether it will be deafeningly loud. I had to walk out of one production last year in (of all places!) the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse: a representation of a Jacobean theatre, with lighting only by candles, yet amplified sound.

The trick is to set record level at no more than 50% at the start to allow for such inevitable increases in volume through the gig, that normally avoids any overloading of the recorder's mic preamps, which sounds terrible when using a modern digital recorder!

I wonder if, in fact, it will make any money, after all the performers must be paid and such a project will require not an inconsiderable amount of rehearsal time, to say nothing of venue hire, agents' fees, and I would imagine a lawyer and accountant are needed for contractual and financial matters.

One can always ask one of the performers on the merch table. I got the impression from Paul Sartin that a recording will be done, and the one rehearsal recording aired on the Folk Show sounded very good indeed - despite my dear wife insisting that the ladies should have been higher in the mix!!!

The Transports is a ballad opera telling the true story of two convicts who fell in love in prison as they were waiting to be sent on the First Fleet to Australia. They had a child, were cruelly separated, but thanks to a kind gaoler, were eventually united. It was recorded in 1977 by giants of the folk world - June Tabor, Nic Jones, Martin Carthy, Norma Waterson. 40 years on a new generation of folk stars - Nancy Kerr, Faustus, the Young'Uns - are touring their new production. rActually two years ago a visiting school from Australia performed their own version of The Transports on a tour around the UK. I saw them at Victoria Gardens on The Embankment in London. There was a storm brewing and the sound effects from the boats on the Thames and the thunder kind of emphasised the ambiance of their theatre.

Likely most of the kids came from migrant families - that is they had direct connections with Australia's social history. Whereas I doubt very much whether those involved with the current Transports show have many (if any) links to anything to do with emigration.

I also agree that the current Transports is 'showbiz.' Bellemey's more authentic contribution to the folk scene must surely be his Maritime Suite - alas still unissued and largely ignored. Ditto his Kipling Ballads.

peter Bellamy may have been a lovely fella, but his voice bore little relation to any traditional singer I've ever heard, live or recorded, and I couldn't listen to it then or now...

Peter's voice is only relevant to the 1977 version.Whether he was a 'lovely fella' or not is irrelevant: It has no bearing on the current production.

Peter wrote The Transports and for that he should be lauded; Wikipedia (I know; see other thread) says 'it is often cited as Bellamy's greatest achievement'.
A new version is now being performed, and that's what this thread is about. See it, hear it, then judge.

I too am looking forward to seeing the production in Cambridge next week. I think it's a fitting tribute to Peter's talent that his folk ballad-opera is still out there on tour.I hear from the radio programme that it has been added to and given a present day relevance which seems in keeping with the folk process. As well as being an historical awareness-raiser concerning the plight of 18th century transportees I hope it will also bring younger folk enthusiasts to know the work of a much missed Bellamy.Show business perhaps but show business with a folk music aspect to it and that's not so often seen.I agree with Good Soldier Schweik that a Samaritans collection would be a good idea; for the reasons already outlined.

Thanx for the cast info. I managed to acquire a poster from the venue - strictly above board of course. Also on the merchandising side of life - I would definitely have bought a teeshirt if there had been any (profits to charity perhaps). But hey it's really all about the show and the music (and Peter of course). It was a good opportunity to publicise the work of local refugee and migrant organisations and good to see that happening.

I'm not sure that we heard all the original songs? I've a bad memory for that sort of thing.

but yes, Richard Mellish ( 05 Jan 17 - ) , louder than I needed. Good clear diction from all of them and good sound so I'm not sure why they needed such volume. Using one earplug made it bearable and clear enough. The unaccompanied songs were lovely.
Matthew Crampton's narration worked really well.

My wife bought the original LP after a concert by Peter Bellamy. It was the only copy he sold.

On the cover, he wrote QANTAS on the bow of the hulk, and added; "To Freda, Thank you for making my night!"

We thought the message was humorous, and didn't realise how desperate he was beginning to feel.

I wish he could read all these compliments today.

I was lucky enough to see a production at the Hastings International Folk Festival back in 1987. My 5 year old daughter thought it was a "turkey" that rang his bell! Peter Bellamy was there in person, and it was wonderful - just as good as the studio recording. I always found the record - marvellous though it was in most respects - was spoiled by the Watersons' rendition of "Sweet Loving Friendship" which should be a tender love song, but they just charge through it with no soul or feeling at all. It just sounds as though they were using the song for practising their close-harmony work. Anyway, never mind that now - the work is alive and well, thank goodness.
