Subject: Obit: Alexandrov Ensemble From: robomatic Date: 25 Dec 16 - 03:03 PM 2016 continues to be a hard year for musicians. The famed Alexandrov Ensemble has lost about three score of members in one unhappy fell swoop. As an admirer of Red Army Chorus performances I am sorry to learn of this. I am sure the Chorus as an institution will survive, but this is a hard blow. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Alexandrov Ensemble From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 25 Dec 16 - 07:53 PM That's really bad news. They were a great sound that's always been there all my life and before, whatever the changes in Russia and the world. (Founded in 1928.). I'm sure it'll be set up again in some form, but the continuity will be gone |

Subject: RE: Dec 2016 Obit: Alexandrov Ensemble From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 27 Dec 16 - 09:02 AM It's odd the way in the UK media, if it reported this at all, it seems to have reported as "Russian military plane crashes", with the Alexandra Ensemble being very much an aftterthought way down the story, if it is mentioned at all. National mourning in Russia, but we're all taken up with George Michael"s death. |

Subject: RE: Dec 2016 Obit: Alexandrov Ensemble From: Thomas Stern Date: 27 Dec 16 - 12:31 PM sad. There are numerous Soviet / Russian groups, the one I most closely associate with Russian Folk music and later Dance is the PYATNITSKY Choir. Founded with peasant singers in 1911, and later expanded to include instrumental and dance traditions. Thomas. |

National mourning in Russia, but we're all taken up with George Michael"s death. The Guardian reported it immediately and extensively as 'breaking news'. |
Subject: RE: Dec 2016 Obit: Alexandrov Ensemble From: akenaton Date: 27 Dec 16 - 01:57 PM Very sad news and I thoroughly agree with Mr McGrath. As a footnote I think the crash will probably turn out to be terrorism, but the facts will not be released for several political reasons. |
Subject: RE: Dec 2016 Obit: Alexandrov Ensemble From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 27 Dec 16 - 03:21 PM The Guardian did report it, but tucked away inside the paper, with a front page handed over to George Michael, and, as I said, it was "Russian military plane crashes", with a mention of the Alexandrov Ensemble tucked away well down the story. |
Subject: RE: Dec 2016 Obit: Alexandrov Ensemble From: GUEST Date: 27 Dec 16 - 05:16 PM It was a headline for a while on the BBC online news, with the Ensemble mentioned in the first few sentences. Today they have more on the vicitms |
