As no-one has yet started an obit thread for Alan, who passed away peacefully while taking an afternoon nap last Friday afternoon, 30th December, at the age of 74, I'm taking this opportunity to record my grateful thanks to a lovely man - whom I first met when he was running the Sidmouth festival campsite in the mid-1970s and who contributed so much to the British folk scene, particularly in Dorset, Wiltshire and Devon, and including through his encouragement of acoustic and unaccompanied singing (Middle Bar Singers, Wareham Wail), and hard graft at festivals (Sidmouth, Christchurch, Chippenham),

Deepest sympathies to Nicky and the rest of the family.

I never knew or met Alan, but he sounds like someone whith whom I would have had a lot in common. I hope that his friends wil post on this thread with memories and tales of their times with him.

My condolences to Alan's family; both genetic and his wider "folk family" who'll also miss him. Memories of the Middle Bar and Wareham Wail predominate for me – particularly Alan with chef's apron and pig's head on a platter at the Wail. He contributed a huge amount to folk song and was a true gentleman. R.I.P.

New Alan well from his work at Sidmouth and various clubs in Dorset & Hampshire. We also enjoyed several ride in "Tess" the Transit including manhandling it out of ditches on the way to LNE at Sidmouth.

Another good man gone.
I knew Alan for forty plus years and always revelled in his company, good humour and his gentlemanly ways. Not only have I lost a good friend but so has the folk world at large. Alan had an infectious passion for folk song, music, dance and the love of getting people together to share the sheer joy of it with each other.
He will be long remembered for not just the contributions he made to Sidmouth festival, founding the Middle Bar Singers or running the campsite; not just for founding the Wareham Wail but mainly for being himself. There will never be another Alan and as long as we remember him, he will always be with us.
Our hearts go out to Nikki and all his family with love.

A lovely Bloke, a true and proper Folkie, his involvement with the Wail was inspirational. Nothing seemed to faze him, it all ran just "Tickety Boo " I cannot thank him enough for the wonderful weekends we had at the Wail Our condolences to Nikki and his Family

I didn't know him as well as some of the other Sidmouth/Middle Bar Singers, having only joined the latter around the year 2000, but share with them their appreciation for all he did for folk music at Sidmouth and elsewhere.

I have known Alan since around 1970 - At the Christchurch Folk Club and early Christchurch Folk Festival, and then we were both founding members of Twynham Morris (of Christchurch) and he was always a willing and able friend and singer.
I will always remember his singing of the Thirty Foot Trailer (by Ewan McCall) amongst others.

Alan was one of the heroes of keeping Sidmouth going in 2005, taking charge of organising the campsite single-mindededly and almost single-handedly (and I'm not even sure of the 'almost' in saying that last bit!)

I recall standing windswept in February 2005 with him, Gordon Newton and Tom Addison surveying the field from the Bulverton marquee site musing on the adequacy of the latter, later assuring Gordon that this is where it had always been raised after its move from the Bowd site around the turn of the millennium.

The current organisers have much to thank him for.

Sad news indeed, my condolences to his Family, I have many happy memories of Stewarding the Main Campsite at Sidmouth with him from the late '60's onwards, he was always cheerful and good natured even when faced with apparently insoluble problems and the idiocy of others !!.

Very sad news that we have lost one of the true gentlemen of English folk music. Many happy memories of Alan, always in the thick of things at Sidmouth and The Wail, and because he took the work of running the campsite at Sidmouth so seriously, too brief visits to the Middle Bar for the occasional song. Thank you Alan for your part in making sure Sidmouth continued so that thousands of people can enjoy it still. Condolences to Nicky and the family.

Thank you for all your lovely comments. Alan is my father. Both mum and the rest of the family are enjoying hearing how well loved and and inspirational he was! We would love for this to keep being shared and hope his memories will remain!

Nikki and family, Today was a strange day I was driving through kenilworth and saw a guy who just looked like Alan and carrying a guitar on his shoulder, I looked up on the net only to find that Alan passed away, I am so sorry to hear this, as you know we go back along way to the very early Sidmouthvand Poole days, I hope you are all well would love to catch up Mo x
