Subject: January Press Room [NH] Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 15 Jan 17 - 02:53 PM First Press Room Shanty Sing of the New Year! And it's the start of our 14th year, to boot. (First session was the second Saturday in January, 2003 -- we changed to third Saturday the following year.) We were foiled in December by the slippery weather (although Nick Noble and Jamie Bishop carried on valiantly with a slim parade of irregulars) so, I don't know about you, but I'm itchy to sing sea songs this Saturday! Live music (and, especially, participatory live music) rules! Come join us for the shanty sing on Saturday! Music makes the world a better place. Linn |

Saturday looks good. There is a march in Market Square in front of North Church -- it starts at 1 and goes until 2 or 3. There's another that starts at 3, but it's not in downtown Portsmouth. I'm hoping the Market Square gathering won't interfere with parking around session time. Linn |

Subject: RE: January Press Room [NH] Shanty Sing From: Charley Noble Date: 22 Jan 17 - 01:40 PM The session was caught short at 6:30 by a Shakespeare group holding a special event upstairs. They were better armed than we were, swords and knives, and we were being rather loud with our singing. However, I certainly enjoyed the session, some really good singing and some songs I was not familiar with. Cheerily, Charlie Ipcar |
Subject: RE: January Press Room [NH] Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 23 Jan 17 - 07:23 PM Sorry, I've been tied up with other things... When I got to The Press Room on Saturday, the place was packed with marchers from the earlier Women's March in Market Square -- listening to the jazz that entertain lunchers before the 3:30 start of the shanty sing. And, yes, we did have to wrap early because of the Shakespearean event upstairs. The general manager had messaged me, but I received no response to my query as to whether we could co-exist or whether we'd need to shut down early. My mistake -- I should have pursued that answer so I could have let everyone know. I apologize. (I also thought I'd posted it here earlier, but evidently I didn't -- again, I'm sorry.) Subject: RE: January Press Room [NH] Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 24 Jan 17 - 03:17 PM Just heard from Bill Dunlap who made a couple corrections -- I didn't jot down that he had sung "Rolling Down to Old Maui" early in the session. I think it was probably between songs 4 and 5. Brain cramp; didn't get it on the list. Also Gina's song (42 on the list) is actually entitled "Oily Grail". Thanks, Bill! Linn |
