Subject: RE: BS: Oscars 2017 From: Steve Shaw Date: 26 Feb 17 - 07:32 PM I absolutely don't give a flying fart about the Oscars. I could inject more vitriol but I'll leave it at that. |

Subject: RE: BS: Oscars 2017 From: Donuel Date: 27 Feb 17 - 08:04 AM I like to hear what artists have to say. AFTER all the Hollywood profit motives and ridiculous fashion commercials are done the real artists are given precious seconds to speak. What was said was profound. I daresay those who are not artists don't give a damn. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oscars 2017 From: Senoufou Date: 27 Feb 17 - 09:21 AM I've no interest in it either, never have. People prancing around in fancy gowns and black ties, being ogled by adoring fans. Nah. The trouble is, it's obviously Big Business. The Oscar winners will get enormous publicity and this will encourage big box-office numbers. Most of these hyped-up events have Money at the core. I watch films recommended by friends/family. They know my tastes and their opinions are more useful than Awards. Most of the blockbusters haven't been my cup of tea at all. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oscars 2017 From: Stilly River Sage Date: 27 Feb 17 - 11:58 AM For those who actually come to this thread looking for some discussion of it, I missed the first half hour, but caught most of the rest. It was remarkably sedate compared to the Golden Globes. Those, you will recall, happened shortly after the election and people were still in shock. The Oscars had some remarks, and there was subtext evident as we waited to see if people were going to use their outdoor voices and urge people to get out and resist. There were several references to Carrie Fisher's remarks that Streep shared at the Golden Globes, to "take your broken heart, make it into art." I think, like media in general, they are realizing that to further "burn their brand" would only polarize their audiences. Better to get busy making influential films that might not only entertain, but inform. That snafu at the end seems to have been when Beatty showed her the card, Faye Dunaway not actually reading the entire card for context but simply reading out the name of the film printed there. Under the pressure of the moment she didn't think about what she was seeing, a mistaken award card. Who handed the card to the pair is going to be a question for today and the rest of the week. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oscars 2017 From: punkfolkrocker Date: 27 Feb 17 - 02:22 PM I try to watch 1 or 2 movies a day - oscar winning has no influence... well... not positive.. I tend to be wary of multiple oscar winning films because it may be an indication of dull middle of the road middle-brow emotionally manipulative moral worthiness... eg.. Tom Hanks and Will Smith.. [though I'm finding Tom Hanks's roles more interesting & convincing as he ages] I prefer low-brow exploitation trash and high-brow pretentiously disappearing up it's own arse cinema entertainment... That's not to say i snobbishly avoid all middle ground stodge movies... Some - even oscar winners - are good, even excellent, entertaining movies One of my old school mates is now a well respected UK Film Critic, we started off on an equal footing discovering and loving cinema.. He had the writing talent & networking skills to turn it into a creer.. we have similar tastes and opinions... |
