I'm Stunned!

I've just checked his facebook page and there's a post from his family saying that he passe away suddenly.

My condolences to his family. He was a stalwart of the folk community and will be sorely missed.

R.I.P. Phil Garland.

Phil Garland meticulously researched and then wrote songs about some of the early settlers, miners, swagmen and characters that lived in New Zealand, especially those from South Island. He was a natural left hander but played the guitar as a right hander because that was how the diagrams in the books told you to play.

He was a dance caller and played with several bands over the years including 'big uglies, he and I have been trying to put a 'small ugly' together since December but never got it together.

He recently lost his partner, Jan, which knocked him badly and has had ongoing health problems in recent years. He went into hospital for treatment but died overnight.

I got to know him in the last three years but most Kiwis would know him much better than me.

He has left a lot of us much poorer for his absence but better for knowing him.

So saddened by this news. Had known Phil since the mid 60s when I lived in Christchurch, and had kept in touch ever since.
He gave so much to the NZ folk music community in general, and NZ folklore specifically. His music and book will live on.
Condolences to his brother Mike, his children, and the wider family.

Aotearoa New Zealand has lost a national treasure. The only good news is that Phil's work will live on in our memories, which we can eternally refresh thanks to his compositions and recordings. I published Phil's book 'Faces in the Firelight' and was working with him to bring out a sequel, 'Swags to Riches' — we had two days in April scheduled to meet and work on the book, in conjunction with his guest spot at the Wellington folk club. Phil's writings and compositions, his storytelling and performance of his own works and that of others, were outstanding, second to none. My condolences to the family — haere atu ra e te rangatira.

Only spoke to him a couple of times, corresponded occasionally, but Phil was always helpful and knowledgeable. The folk scene here will be a poorer place.

Indeed a legend.
I heard Phil perform on many occasions in NZ days, and a couple of times in Oz, and always found him enlightening and entertaining in his interpretation of New Zealand's history and folklore.
A sad day for the NZ folk scene; he will certainly be missed. Condolences to his family and friends too.
RIP, mate.

Phil was well-known and widely respected throughout New Zealand for his musicianship and knowledge. He will be sadly missed. If you google him you will find a wealth of information as well has his website. I have added his name to the "In Memoriam" thread. My condolences to all who know and love him.

RIP

Peter

Kiwi folk legend Phil Garland has died, aged 75.

"It is with our deepest regret that we write to inform you that Phil Garland the father of New Zealand folk music has passed away at the age of 75 on the 15th of March," the Garland family said in a statement.

Awarded a Queen's Service Medal in 2014 for his services to folk music, Garland recorded 18 albums, and won the New Zealand Music Awards folk album of the year three times.

"Born and raised in Christchurch, Phil Garland is one of New Zealand's true musical treasures, a respected folklorist and a musical balladeer. His mission for over 30 years has been to gather and preserve for posterity the songs and stories of New Zealand.

"Phil will be missed by the many people he impacted during his rich life, not only for his music, but his teaching, Running of folk clubs and music nights, concerts and so much more. He is survived by his brother and five daughters."

His funeral will be held in Christchurch on Friday, March 24, with details yet to be finalised.

in respect of traditional folk, Phil was to NZ what Danny Spooner was to Oz - the real deal, the man. They will both be sorely missed.

Condolences to Phil's family and loved ones.

Haven't been able to get on the Mudcat for a while, so this is a bit late.

Phil had the marvellous ability to take his own songs, other people's songs, and traditional songs, and blend them into a whole that made the most of New Zealand's songs.

My favourites are probably "Davy Lowston" and "The Stable Lad".

Sadly I missed the tribute programmes for this amazing guy - a world-renowned researcher of NZ folk music, song and dance indeed.

Meanwhile at the NZBC Sound Archives and National Library there are programmes of performances by Phil on national radio.

Whilst most (all?) of the above are not on-line there are some podcasts from other sources:
