I was lucky enough to meet him three times - he was very friendly, and happy to talk music and guitars. I understand some people, especially promoters, had a different experience.

I seem to remember hearing that he was recording a new album (the first for ages) to celebrate his 90th birthday. I wonder if anything came of it.

i , like thousands of other people, owe him or thanks for writing songs that helped me make a living.

i think also he was responsible for introducing other artists on the Chess label to English folk.

everyone was going nuts about him in the early 60's. he was revered by the beat groups.

i bought the two books of sheet music that were available and found the weird jazz keys and the strange pictures of him in a dj - mystifying. he looked weird.

i think maybe i was right - there was something rather unfathomable about him.

I saw Chuck on a package show possibly in 1964 at the old Finsbury Park Astoria, when he was backed by the Nashville Teens. He stopped in the middle of a song and told the keyboard player to turn down and leave solos to himself!!! I remember that he had a huge Gibson amp, nothing was miked up in those days of course.

Listening to many of his records this morning, it soon became obvious that he never tuned his guitar before a recording session!!!

He will be greatly missed but never forgotten.

Best Rock and Roll concert I ever saw was Chuck and Bo Diddley on the same bill in Wash. D.C. around '72. It was just a runaway freight train from start to finish. If any Chuckophiles haven't seen the documentary and concert film "Hail, Hail Rock and Roll" with Keith Richard and other Rock luminaries I highly recommend it. In the early '80's I was in a blues band and the singer decided he wanted to do "Johnny B. Goode" and I thought no problem but it took me weeks to get those double stops right and I'm not sure I ever did. In addition to his great song writing he was a very original guitarist.

Chuck was notorious for picking local musician AND he never seemed to look very far for them.
Rather than find a band from the area that was familiar with his music, he would often employ competent, but unsympathetic musicians.

Another great gone. Definitely a legend in his own lifetime.

I heard once that when he toured he just picked up a local band to back him. Anyone know if this is true?

I saw him at Newcastle on the same tour that Murray mentions; he was very good, although only on stage for a short time, however on that occasion it was Baldry and Bond groups that blew me away. Saw him on his own a few years later in Sunderland and he was mesmerising. Probably the man who ignited my interest in the Blues. RIP.

It's hard to imagine how ubiquitous Chuck's music/songs where in the UK back in the first part of the 60s.
I would say that EVERY beat group back then had Chuck's songs in there stage repertoire.

My own favourite, which I used to sing at my local folk club, was the not that well known " No money down".
I only saw Chuck live once, and that was a disappointing performance.

But he certainly was one of the greats.

In the mid 80's, I think, I convinced a couple of workmates to go to a Chuck Berry performance in Newcastle, Oz. He was on tour and there was a strike with the airlines, or maybe bad weather stopped planes going from Sydney (NSW) to Brisbane (QLD) and I happened to hear on the radio that Chuck Berry was going to be at a small local venue that night in Newcastle instead.

As I recall, it was a solo performance - either that or Mr Berry was so mesmerising that the rest of the band made no impression on my memory at all. His performance was stunning. The sad thing was that there were only about 50 people in the audience, but Mr Berry performed with the same energy and focus as he would have if there were thousands of people there.

It's one of the best memories of my life.

Me and my schoolmates, young teenagers in the early to mid 1970s started off in bands learning Chuck Berry [& Eddie Cochran] songs...

Chuck Berry ...he bestrode the world of rock n' roll like a colossus.

I vividly remember seeing him at the Usher hall in Edinburgh in 1965 on one of these "package tours" so popular in the 60's. The Moody Blues, Long John Baldry, and the Graham Bond Organization were on the same bill. All the acts were good , but Berry absolutely ruled that stage.

Not a saint, but a Hellluva performer. Went to an R and B show in the mid fifties in Norfolk Va. Not surprisingly, Carl Perkins was mia, but not Chuck. He put on a dynamite performance. I hope he makes it to heaven.
