Subject: Tune Req: Jigs in 6 bar Phrases From: DaveJohnson Date: 21 Mar 17 - 07:58 PM Gday from OZ I am trying to locate at least one other 6/8 jig in 6 bar phrases to go with the "Silly Old Man" I have for a dance named for Captain Bligh. It is for a Heritage Ball that is coming up in Sydney. The dance and tune were unearthed by Heather Clarke. Her website is worth a look www.colonialdance.com.au if colonial dance and music is your thing. Bligh is known for being deposed as governor of New South Wales and for having his ship "The Bounty" taken over by mutineers. The abc for the tune I have is: X:1 T:Silly Old Man M:6/8 L:1/8 K:Gmaj D/2E/2|"G"G2G Gge|dBG A2G|"Am"ABd e2a|"G"GBG gfe|dBG ABd|"Em"BAG E2:| |:g|"G"gdg gbg|"D"fed ede|"Em"gab a2g|"G"gab abg|"D"fed efg|"G"dBG "D"A2:| Thanks |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Jigs in 6 bar Phrases From: Jack Campin Date: 22 Mar 17 - 06:11 AM In old sources you often find 9/8 jigs (like Follow Her Over the Border/Peacock Follow the Hen) written out misbarred, so they appear to be 6 bars of 6/8 rather than 4 of 9/8. Would that do? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Jigs in 6 bar Phrases From: DaveJohnson Date: 22 Mar 17 - 07:54 AM Not really. The tune I posted is definitely in 3-bar phrasing within the 6-bar line. I had a go at modifying Follow Her Over the Border and though it bears only a passing resemblance to the original it works. Subject: RE: Tune Req: Jigs in 6 bar Phrases From: leeneia Date: 22 Mar 17 - 10:56 AM Hello, Dave. I just composed a 6-bar jig called 'The Honeycomb.' I'll PM you a PDF and you can use it if you want. Or it might be a JPG. My scanner gets fractious sometimes. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Jigs in 6 bar Phrases From: leeneia Date: 22 Mar 17 - 11:25 AM That won't work' I can't attach anything to a PM. Can you trust me with your actual e-mail address? If so, PM it to me, and I will send you the music using my g-mail account. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Jigs in 6 bar Phrases From: Marje Date: 22 Mar 17 - 02:19 PM "Black Joke" aka "Black Joak" is a jig with a six-bar A part, but a ten-bar B part, so you'd need to do some rewriting. Marje |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Jigs in 6 bar Phrases From: Mo the caller Date: 23 Mar 17 - 04:22 AM I hate tunes that are distorted like that. A well known writer of what the Americans call 'English Country' Dances has done one called Horseplay that uses Horses Brawl and another called 'Road to Youth' (mis)using Road to the North, both as 32bars. Disconcerting to dance to or play. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Jigs in 6 bar Phrases From: Marje Date: 23 Mar 17 - 04:30 AM There are tunes, though, that exist in several form with different numbers of bars. In fact I think one morris version of Black Joke has an odd extra half bar. "The Three Fishermen" (I think that's its name) is one that sometimes has an 8-bar B, sometimes 12-bar. "Mrs Casey" is another. I suppose they have at some time been adapted to fit a particular dance. Marje |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Jigs in 6 bar Phrases From: BobL Date: 23 Mar 17 - 05:52 AM The same dance appeared earlier (1710-28) in Dancing Master as "New Anything", to a 32 bar reel. Presumably it was recycled to go with the popular song tune. TBH, it isn't a good fit to the 6-bar phrases, especially the last move: 1st couple, in middle place, lead down through the 3s, cast back up to middle place, lead up through the 2s and cast down to middle place again - a lot of movement for eight bars, let alone six. Maybe today's interpretation is wrong and that wasn't what the instructions actually meant. FWIW I call this dance with a shortened final figure, using a recording of a 32 bar reel from Dr. Bowser's Brown Bowel Oil Band - anyone else remember them? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Jigs in 6 bar Phrases From: BobL Date: 23 Mar 17 - 06:05 AM Forgot to say that I had a look through my fairly extensive dance database for other jigs with 6-bar phrases. No luck. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Jigs in 6 bar Phrases From: DaveJohnson Date: 23 Mar 17 - 07:54 AM Thanks for the ideas. Having played for years with 8/16/32 bar phrasing I am surprised at how comfortable 3/6/12 bar phrasing is. Here's my adaptation of Black Joak (apologies to morris musos) X:1 T: Black Joak C: A tune derived from an old bawdy song (c1730) and often used for morris dancing. Adapted for Silly Old Man and its 6-bar phrases. Subject: RE: Tune Req: Jigs in 6 bar Phrases From: Jack Campin Date: 23 Mar 17 - 08:44 AM Hungarian songs often have three-bar phrases.
