Subject: Ode to Joy - other lyrics From: Susan of DT Date: 22 Mar 17 - 10:44 PM When I was in elementary school (Brooklyn, 1950s) we sang a set of words to Ode to Joy that do not seem to be anywhere on Google. I remember the first two lines: Ode to joy from Heaven descending Hail joy all you here below... Does anyone know the rest or where it came from? Yes, I know there are several sets of words sung to Ode to Joy, notably Jabowocky and parodies thereof. |
Subject: RE: Ode to Joy - other lyrics From: BobL Date: 23 Mar 17 - 04:33 AM Jabberwocky? That would be an awkward fit - different metre (8:8:8:6 iambic versus 8:7:8:7 trochaic). BTW only poets measure metres in feet. |

Subject: RE: Ode to Joy - other lyrics From: Susan of DT Date: 23 Mar 17 - 07:30 AM BobL - Jabberwocky sings to beautifully to Ode to Joy. Just stretch a couple of syllables. I was trying to find you one on youtube, but there are a number of tunes people sang it to and I did not see how to limit the search to that tune. (jabberwocky ode to joy got all ode to joys with any words and ode to joy jabberwocky got all jabbowockys at any tune). Nigel - thanx, but I did not see this set of words. Our chorus is singing the common Joyful, Joyful words, which is what got me started thinking about this. |

Subject: ADD Version: Ode to Joy (words from Schiller) From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Apr 21 - 03:26 PM Hi, Susan. Hope life is treating you well. I've missed you. I did find this version in Sing Together, one of the US Girl Scout songbooks (Third Edition, 1973, page 54 - also in the 1936 and 1949 editions) ODE TO JOY Hail thee, Joy! All hail, divinest, Daughter of Elysium! We approach thy light so cheering, To thy altar now we come. Thou hast pow'r to bind together What the world would rend apart, And where-e'er thy light wings flutter, Love and peace are in the heart. Joy, 'tis Joy from heav'n descended Turns unseen the wheel of live, Joy by love and hope attended, Leading hearts from worldly strife, Draws the stream from hidden sources, Stirs the seed in earth confined, Rolls the stars along their courses, Moves the heart of all mankind. from Songs for Informal Singing, National Recreation and Park Association I didn't find "Ode to Joy" in any of our school songbook indexes. I'm sure there are several versions in school songbooks, but not with that title. |

Brexit, brexit, that will fix it, Bran and prunes and rhubarb too. Have some brexit for your breakfast: You will do a great big poo. I gave brexit to a hippo Who had constipation too.
