UK ones anyway. New ones come through the post and on one page there is a sticker that says "remove". I did. On the sticky side there was a metal loop and a black splodge at the gap (a resistive load).

Now, call me an Electronic Engineer but, thinks I:

"if they were protecting the passport from nefarious individuals with scanners (in transit), the loop must be over the RFID area. So if it is halfway decent security, why don't I use the postal envelope it came in as a sleeve and put the sticker back in place?"

Well folks - any comments? Is there anyone with good nearfield radio knowledge with an insight?

FWIW I keep my credit card in a mu-metal sleeve. Even though the banks reckon to compensate anyway! This is easier.

What a good idea Mr Red. Good thinking! I wonder if there's a simple protective wallet one can buy which does the same job as your mu-metal sleeve on your credit card? My husband travels with two passports (dual nationality) and his bank cards, and has to board three planes to get to his destination in Africa. It would be good to know he could protect both passports in some way from unofficial scanning!
I really did NOT want a bank debit card which does that non-contact paying rubbish. But you have to get a 'normal' one specially from the bank and you have to pay. I must get round to buying a protective little wallet for my cards. Sigh...

You shouldn't need to pay to get a normal debit or credit card, though you do need to ask the bank to send you one. Lloyds and Santander certainly don't charge for them.

I have a large metal sheath for my credit card. It's called a desk. I pay cash on a day-to-day basis. I use my credit card only over the phone with government agencies to pay for things I cannot pay for in person due to wait times or that I cannot pay for by electronic transfer from my bank (province of NB.ca government are arseholes). And, I carry a low line of credit. I reduced it from $20k to $2k when I retired. Of course, my travels are limited... maybe a few miles, at most, for groceries and such.

If you think I am paranoid, Air Miles Canada just shut down due to fraud. Nuff said.

There are many versions of wallets for passports, the credit card sleeve I bought on E-Bay for a pound or so.
