Subject: Shanty - where are these guys bound? From: Mr Red Date: 28 Mar 17 - 05:41 AM Shanty singing on board - video Very impressive, but not actually working the ropes. Now, any Norskephones know where they are bound? It sounds more a Norwegion location than anything in Australasia. |
Subject: RE: Shanty - where are these guys bound? From: GUEST Date: 28 Mar 17 - 06:17 AM I think they're singing "We're bound for the coast of Norway" (in English) |

Subject: RE: Shanty - where are these guys bound? From: Jack Campin Date: 28 Mar 17 - 07:38 AM 6900 NOK = 645 GBP. Not all that expensive as such things go. |
Subject: RE: Shanty - where are these guys bound? From: Steve Gardham Date: 28 Mar 17 - 08:19 AM South Australia adapted 'We're bound for the coast of Norway.' and why not? |
Subject: RE: Shanty - where are these guys bound? From: leeneia Date: 28 Mar 17 - 10:28 AM It sounds to me like "bound for coastal Norway". |
Subject: RE: Shanty - where are these guys bound? From: GUEST Date: 28 Mar 17 - 11:53 AM I think you can identify a pattern "dah dah dee dee dah dah dah dah", which would fit "we're bound for the coast of Norway" best, rather than "... coastal Norway" (which is also less normal English .. e.g. the song is "the coast of Peru", not "coastal Peru!". |
Subject: RE: Shanty - where are these guys bound? From: EBarnacle Date: 28 Mar 17 - 07:05 PM Clearly South Australia. |
Subject: RE: Shanty - where are these guys bound? From: ChanteyLass Date: 28 Mar 17 - 07:36 PM While I can hear Norway, some of you hear better than I do! She may have been bound for Stavanger, as in this video. Another one shows her in Bergen. https://youtu.be/2wgedMKGtlk |

Subject: RE: Shanty - where are these guys bound? From: Mr Red Date: 29 Mar 17 - 08:13 AM the latter link they are pretty clear on "South Australia" However maybe this video is on the same day as my OP and they are definitely bound for "Norway" and it sounds like "South" or "Coast of" depending on chorus. However I asked Chas Clark, who lived in Sweden for years and commented on my Norwegian page for me. He says "coast of Norway" sung in English. |
Subject: RE: Shanty - where are these guys bound? From: MMario Date: 29 Mar 17 - 09:17 AM I hear "old cold Norway" |
Subject: RE: Shanty - where are these guys bound? From: Mr Red Date: 29 Mar 17 - 10:19 AM correction - you would feel that! |
Subject: RE: Shanty - where are these guys bound? From: ChanteyLass Date: 29 Mar 17 - 05:21 PM Regarding the link I posted, I thought that since the crew had already arrived in Norway, South Australia could be their next destination. I also liked the part of the video that showed the chantey singer used a mic. In another video, he uses a megaphone. And I like the tune used for Santy-Anno, which is a variant of the one I usually hear. |
Subject: RE: Shanty - where are these guys bound? From: FreddyHeadey Date: 31 Mar 17 - 12:25 PM Si Vo says "Good Old Norway" https://youtu.be/t8s_Z13jEeo |
Subject: RE: Shanty - where are these guys bound? From: GUEST,Martin Ryan Date: 31 Mar 17 - 03:44 PM That's Staadsrad Lehmkuhl - my barky! I sailed aboard from the Cyde to Shetland via Skye and Orkney, many years ago. Her home port is Bergen - so "the coast of Norway" makes sense. Regards P.s. Remember the helicopter shot in "The Onedin Line"? |
