Effsee, that opens up a wide variety of ideas. The first name that came to mind was Cyril Tawney, who seemed like one of the nicest folk performers a person could ever come across. He wrote very approachable songs like "Grey Funnel Line, and he was a great performer in front of children.
Cisco Houston is another "Man With a Guitar" to study, along with Ed McCurdy and Oscar Brand.
Priscilla Herdman and Deb Cowan are two women with wonderful voices who choose the best of songs from songwriters and traditional sources.

Dick Gaughan may be to your taste.

Thanks for that, but I'm looking for guitars because I play guitar and want songs I can learn easily - hence the 'solo guitar' theme. :)

Not much guitar in evidence, but many of Shirley Collins' recordings feature very minimal accompaniment. Try The Sweet Primeroses or Power of the True Love Knot.

I'd LOVE suggestions of recordings made by WOMEN with solo guitar and vocal, or with minimum other accompaniment.

Joan Baez is a favorite, as well as a personal and musical influence. I will mention that as much as I like Elizabeth Cotton, it's a little too "rural" for my ears these days. Huge talent, just not what I'm after.

Really looking for ANY singer/songwriter or singer/interpreter who recorded under the conditions I mentioned.

Getting into Carthy - thanks for that so far! Digging it!

Oh, I also really dig Phil Ochs.

We're here in the music section to talk about music, not to go off on rants about this or that. Guests, especially, are expected to be on their best behavior, as their parents taught them they were expected to behave as guests. I deleted the last three Guest posts. If our guests wish to post on topic and without ranting, they are invited to re-phrase their posts.
But cut the crap, and talk about music. Leave your "issues" at home. Otherwise, you're not welcome here.

P.S. Admittedly, "Girl With a Guitar" is now an archaic expression, but let's not make an issue of it. Better to just discuss the music and let a faux pas slide here and there.

Early Joan Baez is just voice and guitar, as is early Martin Carthy (some tracks with Swarb's fiddle), early Bruce Cockburn, early Nic Jones.

Nick Drake's not-very-cheerful album Pink Moon is something of a classic in this vein. Neil Young's Live at Massey Hall would be another obvious choice, and one of his best.

I am a singer/songwriter in the vein of Townes Van Zandt, Donovan Leitch, etc. I enjoy listening to a lot of different kinds of folk music, but lately I am looking for inspiration for new songs.

What I'm hoping someone can recommend are recordings of the artist with just their guitar (ok, maybe harmonica or something) - just them solo, though.

Folk (American, European), acoustic blues, Dylanesque bard-type stuff.

For instance, I really like Joan Baez, but I am not sure if there are recordings that just feature her and a guitar.

Any album titles would be appreciated, as would links to downloadable or physical recordings for sale or for free (if public domain or what-have-you).

Thank you!
