Anyone have these? The one that begins: "On the night that I was married, and in my marriage bed.." It may also be known as "The Lowlands of Holland" but this is what I have heard it called. Thanks! Peg

There are several 'Lowlands of Holland' in the database. The one closest to what I sing is Lowlands #4

I think Herbert Hughes collected that one.

Do a DigiTrad search for [Lowlands of Holland] to get the other versions

Incredible, I have Radio Ulster playing and Colum Sands just started playing Dolores Keane singing 'The Lowlands of Holland'.

The tune "The Shoemaker's (Suttors/ Souters) Daughter" is in 'The Scots Musical Museum', #470, to a song by Robert Burns. I don't know of any old verses to it. There's no connection to "The Lowlands of Holland" which is also in SMM, #115. See the Scots tunes index on my website for some additional info on both tunes. www.erols.com/olsonw

hmm...well this is somewhat helpful; not meaning gee how lame, but only I was hoping someone could recommend a recording. The one I heard recently was on A Celtic Sojourn so maybe I will email Brian... also Cordelia's Dad recorded a version. Thanks very much! Which album is that Dolores Keane version on, I wonder? peg

Had some trouble with some of those links but did manage to get the lyrics of the Sandy Denny version; thanks again! I might have it on a recently-purchased Childs Ballads LP, too, that I have not had a chance to listen to yet...

As far as I recall both Tommy Maken and his mother Sarah Maken have recorded The Lowlands of Holland. And also Martin Carthy. You could search the web to get details of available recordings. And I think some of the DigiTrad entries have notes about recordings.

Does anyone know the B part to the tune "The Shoemaker's Daugher" (or the whole tune)? It's written (I'm pretty sure) by Ed Reavey. Thanks

I don't know the song "The Shoemakers Daughter"

I don't even know the joke about "The Shoemakers Daughter",

but I do know lots like

She was only the jockeys' daughter,
but all the horse manure...

:-)

You can find the tune for Shoemaker's Daughter (click) at JC's ABC Tunefinder. Looks like we never answered the lyrics request, unless it actually is a version of "Lowlands of Holland."

I believe the tune that our GUEST asked for on 25-Sep-03 is completely different from THE LOWLANDS OF HOLLAND.

A reel called THE SHOEMAKER'S DAUGHTER was composed by Ed Reavy. It is performed by Maeve Donnelly on fiddle on 2 albums: "Irish Traditional Music in America: The Music of Ed Reavy," and "Celtic Dances: Jigs & Reels from Ireland."

Sound samples can be found at Barnes&Noble.

Robin-

Really, you should be ashamed of yourself.

She was only a Shoemaker's Daughter,
But exceedingly well-heeled!

Do post to the Oz Foray thread from Maine and Guam. Brett needs your advice on places to stay in Brisbane, in between trains.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
