I sorta found mudcat.org by accident, and decided to hang around for a bit. Hope you folks can put up with me.

I did have a sorta serious question: is it considered horribly bad manners to post your own lyrics here? I've seen many requests for lyrics and tunes, but none containing new songs for public consumption.

Hi IceWolf, welcome to Mudcat.

Regarding your serious question: I don't think so, I do it from time to time. Even though we don't claim to be a singer/songwriter forum, several of us write songs and no one has yet objected to them being posted here. They usually crop up when the song seems relevant to the discussion. But many Mudcatters also write songs for a specific thread. So do your worst, you're welcome here.

Bert.

P.S. How did you get a name like that living in bloody Florida?

Welcome, IceWolf--

Posting your own lyrics is not horribly bad manners. I'ven't posted many of mine because I don't consider most of my lyrics "folk" (don't try to define that one without doing a forum search on "folk" first, and reading all the threads that have tried and failed to define it). The ones I have posted have been in response to a request, or because they were germane to the topic under discussion.

I'd say, don't fill the forum with your lyrics--try slipping some into threads first, and see what sort of response you get. Introduce yourself and let phoaks know what kind of stuff you're writing first. But be sure to check out those threads I mentioned...they will give you a clear indication of the community you're getting into!

Good luck! I look forward to seeing what you say!

V

Hi, Ice Wolf. This is, to my biased mind, the best forum on the Web. People here are incredibly helpful, and with only one or two exceptions, friendly and full of all kinds of knowledge. Partly as a result of feeling comfortable here, we tend towards banter, and strings of wierdly creeping stuff. If you hang here for awhile, you will enjoy it. And, as Lauren Bacall once remarked after kissing Humphrey Bogart in "To Have And Have Not", it is even better when you help. So contribute away.
yours, PeterT.

IceWolf - if you're "just gotta" post original lyrics...and still aren't sure of the reception, a reasonably safe place would be in the current incarnation of the tavern/cantina/barn....

As several have said before, mostly original lyrics are getting posted when in a thread that the lyrics relate to, or at request. The "MudCat Tavern" series of threads (which lately has reincarnated as a cantina and a barn, and which is threatening to turn into an Ice Carnival - is looser -- looser even then the "BS:" threads....

Welcome IceWolf, one word of warning about Mudcat: The place can become too adictive. I dread to think how many hours I spend either reading the treads here or chatting with some of the other Mudcatters both in the chat room here (which isn't working at the moment) and on ICQ. Apart from the depth of musical knowledge that exists here (and I'm not one of the knowledgeable ones), there are some great, very friendly people here.

Jon

IceWolf - Perhaps the best way to answer your legitimate serious question is by example. We had a thread a while back about cat farts (see, and you probably this place was filled with stuffed shirts). As that thread evolved, the cooperative synergism that is Mudcat led to production of a neo-classic folk song on the topic of cat farts. Thus far there have been no postings that I'm aware of reporting on audience reception, and I don't think its been recorded yet, but it is most likely undergoing the "folk-process" in numerous dingy bars and pubs and other assorted dens of iniquity folkies are known to frequent. Were I one of the more erudite family members able to do BCTs (blue clickey things), I'd do one here, but I think that you can find this marvelous example of the collective creative consciousness (go ahead and roll over Dr Jung) by entering "cat farts" in the forum search box above. Don't be discouraged by the quality of the song. Think of it more as an aspirational goal rather than as a minimum threshhold. Oh, Yeah! Welcome to the family, Grab yerself a pint and join the fun!

My thanks to all for the welcome. I forget who asked how I got my moniker - but the only way to answer that adequately is to become 'way too autobiographical. The short answer is: I wasn't always in Florida.

"Cat farts" - hmmmm. That's no worse than "Overflowin' Catbox Blues" (Jane Robinson) or "Cats on the Rooftops" (dunno who's responsible for that one).

If you haven't guessed, I like cats, and am owned by two of them.

I will say this: I fear this will become one of my haunts - "fear" due to the sheer volume of posts to the various topics.

As for my own songs, I'll post them on appropriate threads (where my name will soon be infamous, no doubt). Don't want to wear out my welcome.

Now if I can figure out how to make this silly message box break my lines where I want them to, everything would be fine.

Welcome, Ice Wolf, so far you've fit in just fine. Everyone else has pretty much said what I would, so I'll just add: if you don't know, ask, no question is too simple or too far out; someone on here will have an answer or tell ya where to find one. But then, it looks as though you alreayd figured that one out.

Be sure, if you can, to tune into Mudcat Radio on Wednesday nights, 7pm Mudcat time which is EDT in the US. There you will get to see and hear MAX, our wunderkind who created the Mudcat and plays a mean blues and Bert, who regales us with great songs from his own mind and the UK, as well as chats about happenings and the thread of the week. You can also hear udder Mudders' music on tehre, as we've all sent in tapes or cd's of what we do for him to play.

Anyhow, welcome to the Mudcat and, pay heed to Jon's words, it IS wonderfuly addictive!

Welcome IceWolf! I'm fairly new here myself and I can attest that it's a very welcoming group. If you're familiar with HTML, you'll find that a lot of the commands work in your posts. There is usually an HTML practice thread working where you can fool around without taking a chance of irritating anybody. We're a forgiving and helpful bunch. Grab yourself a cold one and dive on in!

Ice Wolf, the best way to post a song is to type your song out, spacing after each line. When you have completed typing it, type
without the space after the r, then select and copy it, and paste it at the end of each line of the song, and in each space between lines. At least that's what works on a Macintosh (I don't know what works--if anything--on a Windows machine--heh, heh).

And Tipper, the best thing to do is to start a new thread (click on the link with those words, and just go where it takes you--name your thread Irish Sessions in Central Florida? then everyone will see it. We have a several friends down that way: Harpgirl, Frank in the Swamps, others. Oh, the heck with it--I'll start the thread four you.) Close this and it'll be soon at the top of the threads list.
