Lots of the words are quite ambiguous to me. rather frustrating Spotify http://open.spotify.com/track/3CU2pFi8OkEPRqZk9tsZG3 yt, (not available for me in UK) https://youtu.be/0iSz7N8mSlY and no easier for me on Parlour Tricks: Liverpool Lad (Alex Glasgow) by Chris Ormston #np on #SoundCloud https://soundcloud.com/chrisormston/parlour-tricks-liverpool-lad-alex-glasgow |
Subject: Lyr Add: LIVERPOOL LAD (Alex Glasgow) From: Noreen Date: 03 Jun 17 - 05:33 PM As good as I can get it (from the Spotify and SoundCloud links above- thanks Freddy): LIVERPOOL LAD (Alex Glasgow) Come here little lad with your Liverpool face Your Liverpool eyes and your Liverpool grace Who's going to win in the Liverpool race? Way down the wide river again Liverpool lad with no pants to his bum (Praise to the Pope ? ? ) for his Liverpool mum Whose belly grows big in a Liverpool slum Way down the wide river again Merseyside merchants are counting their gold The Liverpool scene brings them bounties untold While Liverpool lads and lassies are sold Way down the wide river again Way down the wide river again Way down the wide river again Just that half a line I can't quite get. I think I understand it's meaning, but not sure it's quite right. Any ideas anyone? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'Liverpool Lad' by Alex Glasgow From: FreddyHeadey Date: 03 Jun 17 - 07:39 PM Thanks Noreen, yes I think you've got it there. Including the Pope line. Brilliant. With the words in front of me it's amazing how his diction has improved! I'm embarrassed that, even as a Scouser I'd heard the second line as "Your Liverpool lies..." I might spell the last line "lasses". But AG probably would have been thinking "lassies". ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I don't think this is the grace referred to in the song but fwiw "For nearly a century the Three Graces - The Royal Liver Building, The Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building - have defined one of the world's most recognised skylines. " http://www.visitliverpool.com/things-to-do/pier-head-and-the-three-graces-p17747 incl photo. The rest of the city has changed somewhat since the song was written. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Liverpool Lad (Alex Glasgow) From: GUEST Date: 08 Jun 17 - 04:06 PM Hi folks, Thanks so much for all your help here. I used to sing this song way back and a fellow musician, Martin Sumpton, from that time 30 years ago, recently wrote to me and asked for the words. I had most of them in my head, but with a few gaps. Thanks, Noreen, for writing them out. Your question mark by: "...Liverpool lad with no pants to his bum (Praise to the Pope ? ? ) for his Liverpool mum" I remember it as "Prays to the Pope for his Liverpool mum". I will start singing this again. While researching Liverpool Lad, I re-discovered "Close the Coalhouse Door, Lad" by Alex Glasgow. What a superb song. And they plan on re-opening all those closed coal mines over here in the US. |
