This Just In:

"Between 2010 and 2017, the Pew Research Center asked voters whether colleges and universities have a positive or negative effect "on the way things are going in the country."

From 2010 to 2015, solid majorities of Republicans and Democrats agreed that institutions of higher learning had a positive effect on America. In 2010, Republicans were 58-32 positive and Democrats 65-22. For Democrats, this pattern grew stronger over time, reaching 72-19 in the most recent polling in June.

That was not the case for Republicans, who flipped from positive to negative on college education.

In a survey that was conducted from Aug. 23 to Sept. 2, 2016 — a month after Trump accepted his party's nomination — Republicans' positive assessment of colleges and universities fell to 43 percent, while negative assessments rose to 45 percent. By June of this year, 58 percent of Republicans had a negative view of higher education and 36 percent a positive view."

I'm not a Republican, but it could have a lot to do with the staggering cost of higher education now. I feel sorry for today's students.

I don't think so, Leeneia. The query wasn't about the cost.

Colleges are churning out young people with degrees which are absolutely useless arts and social studies ect.

Higher education was hugely devalued when it became a dumping ground for school leavers with no job prospects.

I would advise young people to go for apprenticeships, building, engineering, technology.
Round where I live shelf stackers have all sorts of educational qualifications, none worth the paper they are printed on.

Maybe the Republicans are the sharp cookie after all.

I dunno.... It's been my experience that the average Republican's opinion of higher education is a direct reflection of what kind of year his favorite college football team is having.

When the Florida Gators or FSU Seminoles are having good seasons, the predominately Republican Florida Legislature (many of whom are UF or FSU alumni) can't seem to throw enough money at higher education. During losing seasons, they can't find enough money in the budget to repave a medium-sized parking lot.

(NOTE: Above comments made with tongue placed firmly in cheek. If you interpreted them as serious opinion, please make an appointment to have your sense of humor adjusted.)

Ake - The trouble with you, is that in most any one of your posts,
I find myself in parts nodding in agreement;
whilst at the same time being deeply opposed to a lot of your general conclusions and prescriptions...

most confusing.... 🤔 😕

PFR: BA Hons and unfinished MA in wanky useless Humanities & Arts subjects...

Attention everyone:

Ake is not what you think he is. Yes he is an automatic nay sayer.
But more than that he is simply doing a Martin Gibson conservative impression. In the parlance of professional con men "Ake has cracked out of turn many times". That means he has made mistakes in pretending to be a moron in small but significant ways.

Ever since a Nixon's memo in response to demonstrations by college kids to limit college entrants to wealthy families, more factors eliminate the poorer students every decade.

Fox News has a campaign to malign College kids as snow flakes, trouble makers along with all the horrible liberal professors.

The upper crust selection committee to help peruse and choose politicians who are indeed stupid enough to move up the ladder to be properly duped is known as the 'National Prayer Breakfast'.
The stupider the better is practically their motto.

Republicans who approve of Trump have another key factor other than being stupid, they are more likely to be Opioid addicts as evidenced by research done on Midwest Republicans.
