On the radio, Gladys Knights masterpiece midnight train to Georgia. She does all the work, I want to be one of the guys that just sings. 'leavin leavin and leavin on that midnight train' I think I could pull it off.. Great gig.. I want it.. Besides I would get to listen to Gladys again and again.. Awesome

She has a great voice.

Backup singers are so important, and it's nice to take note of their role. I like the story of Gimme Shelter by the Rolling Stones, with Merry Clayton coming into the studio at midnight and knocking it out of the park. An NPR interview with Jagger and a track of Clayton singing just background are at this link.

Olddude, I strongly suspect that you are a pip even though you've never sung with Gladys. And I mean this is the nicest way.

Great fruit trees from little pips grow.

Dan, if you were you a pip, you could do no better than be one from an apple tree which I have in may garden. It's an old, old, Sussex variety called a "Crawley Beauty", and it fruits every two years. As I write this, there's a bumper harvest ripening on the tree at the moment.

It makes for a nice, sharp eater or a juice, sweet cooker. Take your pick - or even pip.

Pies, crumbles, apple cake, crepes with stewed apple and maple syrup - and Gladys K in the background. Mmm...

I don't know, Dan, we'll have to see how you shake a tail feather first. It's not all just "ooo's" and "aaah's".

btw, My love for Gladys Knight's singing was renewed when I saw a concert on PBS that she did (with the Pips) at the White House during the Clinton years.

I went to YouTube to check out the Pips.

Watch the blonde guy. I see what you mean by shake the tailfeathers, gillymor.

==========================
As I watched Gladys sing, a teasing thought kept coming to me, saying, "She looks like a white person I've seen recently. Finally it came to me.

Watch Melanie on this video and see if you think she looks like Gladys.

She comes on at 14 seconds.

The year's at the spring,
And day's at the morn;
Morning's at seven;
The hill-side's dew-pearl'd;
The lark's on the wing;
The snail's on the thorn;
God's in His heaven—
All's right with the world!

Mum is known as Pip after Browning's "Pippa Passes"

She and her sister in law are both Elizabeth. Her father in law decided two Elizabeth's in the family would not do and that mum should be called Pip. I don't know why he picked on that one. The name stuck and many (including a few here) know her as Pip but as time's gone by, she's wanted more to be Elizabeth again. That said, I think she prefers being a Pip to being called Liz, Lizzie, Beth, etc.

Richard Pryor did a television special circa 1980 on which The Pips performed just their part of "Midnight Train to Georgia". No Gladys. No recorded lead vocal tract. Just The Pips doing their thing.

My cousin and I were playing our usual word games, as elderly children do, and after 'What was the greatest gig you never went to?' and 'Put together a rock supergroup using only residents of your county', he asked 'If you could be in any band, any era, which would it be?'.

Rather than opting for early Fleetwood Mac, or Sandy-era Fairport, I surprised us both by choosing to be a 1960's Famous Flame backing James Brown.

However, now you've mentioned the Pips........

I'll never forget Johnny Carson (long-time late night host on American television prior to Leno) saying that Gladys Knight was an example of how far a person could go with a great set of pips.

Why be something as mundane as a Pip when you could be an organist!

See YouTube 'Mr bean best live performance funny in London.'

Doesn't Cole Porter have an extended chorus with the word?

"All's as right as can be
Till one night
At my window I see
An absurd bird
With a bundle hung on his nose:

Get baby clothes!

Those eyes of yours are filled with joy
When Nurse appears and cries, "It's a boy!"
He's appalling, he's appealing,
He's a pollywog, he's a paragon,
He's a Popeye, he's a panic,
He's a PIP
He's De-Lovely."
