Ewan McVicar was Gavin Paterson's guest on Celtic Music Radio earlier this week.

Here's the playlist, and a link to where you can hear it again for the next 30 days.

Playlist for Ballads & Balladeers with Gavin Paterson, Tuesday 19 September 2017.

Some weeks ago I spent the afternoon talking with Ewan McVicar about his life and music. Ewan himself chose the music we would discuss and play and all of it reflects a particular time or event in his life. An eclectic mix of sounds to match an eclectic life.

A founder member of the first public folk club in Glasgow, he wrote a chart hit in 1960 but it's not in the Guinness Book - Ewan tells why, he lived and worked in both Africa and the USA in the 60s. Activist, educator and song writer. And more.

And I have more stories and songs that I couldn't squeeze into two hours. I'll play them, along with some other 'out-takes' on a later date.

First Hour, catch up at

1 - Early Influences
Back Water Blues - Big Bill Broonzy
Rock Island Line - Lead Belly
The Moss O' Burreldale - Jimmy MacBeath

2 - Early Days
The Eskimo Republic - Jimmy Ross
Talking Army Blues - Josh MacRae
Cod Liver Oil And The Orange Juice - Hamish Imlach

3 - Around The World
Kassongo - Orchestra Super Mazembe
Rambling Gambler - Alan Lomax
Baby, Please Come Home - John Martyn

Second Hour, catch up at

4 - Politics/Work
Goin' Up In Smokey - SCND Buskers
Ga's Song - Ewan McVicar
Collier Sweetheart - Ewan McVicar

5 - Self Written
Shift And Spin - Mick West
All The Tunes In The World - Tom McConville
Tam The Bam - Ewan McVicar

6 - Recent Work
Clerk Sanders - Janet Russell & Christine Kydd
Bananas Are The Best - Ewan McVicar
Shift And Spin - Fiona Hunter

Thanks for the tip, Bruce. Interesting stories and fine songs.

And I do love the voice of Fiona Hunter. When I saw her name in the playlist I just had to listen to this programme.
