I would be most grateful if any Mudcatters could recommend me books (either factual/biographies or novels,) concerning the music press/magazine industry. I?m looking for something which portrays working life at publications like Melody Maker, NME etc from the inside (1960s onwards) ? day to day goings-on. Many thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Tony Parsons and Julie Burchill have both been prolifically autobiographical. I'd rather dunk my head in a bucket of cold sick than read a whole book by either of them.

I m not sure this will provide info regarding working at the magazine; but "Fifty years of Rolling Stone," 2017 released- should be fascinating for the interviews and
photos alone.

(I wish I could throw more light on the subject, since I worked at that very
publication, for a short time, round the early 80's . I don t remember
much else other than they were quite professional in the offices, but and there was this
elegant white spiral staircase that ran between floors. I have never before or since
so enjoyed running up and down stairs.

Pat Long's history of the NME is the closest book I know giving what you're after. That's the Amazon UK link to its page above. BBC Four covered the same subject in a TV documentary a few years back, but I'm having no luck finding that on YouTube.
