Could anyone suggest some alternative titles for an Oldtime Jam? Something more Oldtimey? Jam sounds too jazzy and modern.

A term often used in England instead of 'session' is 'tune-up'.

specifically - when I list things on mister.red (mid west of UK) I use the terms that I see the organisers use. it might be: blue grass, old time, American old time, Americana - what it won't be is C&W because there is little cross-over and it is a stretch too far for me. As I have little interest - the task of keeping such data up to date means I am picky - basically if I would want to go to an event - I list.

Interestingly using Goggle Translate I got the Danish for jam as marmalade. Which apparently is the word they use for jam (conserve). The word they use for jam (session) is - er - um - jam.

I've played in sessions in the UK for 35 years and I've never heard one called a ' tune up '

In the southern Appalachians, where I met my Dear Husband, folks often gather for a "pickin' party" or a "pick".

Scrolling down the list of current threads I came to a request for an

alternative name for jam--"Carluke Steak" was the one that sprang to mind.

This was the name given by Lanarkshire miners to jam produced by Scott
of Carluke

Am now awake.

'Tune-Up'? WTF??
Never heard of such a thing. In Lincs., we call a Session a 'Session'. A 'Tune-Up' is what we do before we start playing.

Good one, wysiwyg! Not entirely sure why, but some posters (notices) have been using jamm. Well, it is alternative. The other phrase, which may be useful to the OP, is open mic.

Hootenanny was ONLY used in the USA for folk events and concerts in the 1960s. NEVER rock. It was part of the great Folk Scare and we were far above all that chidlwren's music called rock.

Even Peter Paul and Mary joked about it in concert and on records. (You know, those flat back discs with the hole in the middle and grroves on each side?) Yeah, those things.

In Ireland its mostly a 'session' but of course a public session .e n a pub can mean something much more formal how about a Plataround or a hooley again often used in Ireland

When I played in a blues band in Texas back in the '70's we a called it "having a do". "Do" also was our slang for pot.

New Hampshire (and I think New England) prefers session.

I run a trad session (vocal and instrumental), but there are also maritime session (or shanty sings), Irish sessions, old timey sessions, bluegrass sessions...
