O Radix Jesse,
qui stas in signum populorum,
super quem continebunt reges os suum,
quem gentes deprecabuntur:
veni ad liberandum nos,
jam noli tardare
O Root of Jesse,
who stand as a sign for the people,
kings stand silent in your presence,
whom the nations will worship:
come to set us free,
put it off no longer.

Pardon a non believer for being confused. What is the point of this? The association is correct for the season. Other than that?

These chants and texts are some of the most treasured songs of Christianity. Jesse was the father of David, and the Messiah was expected to come from the family of David. "Radix Jesse" is usually translated "Root of Jesse." I've also seen it translated "sprout of Jesse," but seems to stretch a bit far, and it certainly isn't as poetic. Also "rod of Jesse," and THAT might garner some interesting comments around here.

I fear I'm more impressed with Anselm of Padua stepping aside for the 'Flos Martyrorum'.
