I intend to be at a dance with "Pigeon Swing" who specialise in Quebecois music (for English Ceilidh!) and I know Paul Burgess does quite a bit of research. I will ask if he knows anything about it. It may not be until March but I have e-mailed him.

The accordion player and the Fiddler's Fake book have a version with more chromatic notes. The waltz at abcnotation.com is the same piece only simpler.

Youtube has a tune called "Country Waltz" :
Country Waltz - Old-Time American Fiddle Tune. This tune is on page 77 in The Fiddler's Fakebook - a source for many of the tunes I play. It's called Country Waltz - and is listed as American. The book lists this recording - 25 Old Tyme Fiddle Hits (K-Tel FH1).

Hmm, North American perhaps, if it is the same tune.

Another, same name, can't tell if it is same tune but it is in G

Country Waltz at abcnotation.com listed as traditional.

I went to a concert years ago where Cathy Barton, a Missouri performer who majored in folkore, said that this tune came from French Canada. Missouri fiddlers learned it by listening to the radio.

I believe she specified by listening to the radio at night. Don't FM waves travel a great distance at night?

I am trying to find the source of "The Country Waltz" which I think comes from Canada originally. Teasing links I have followed just give it as an old tune. I presume at some point it was recorded played by an older player. Any clues??
