I think the song you are referring to is Lights Out by Graeme Miles. It is one of a number of songs he wrote about his experiences while doing his National Service, The Shores of Old Blighty, probably being the most well known. Graeme died a few years ago and Lights Out was sung, with great emotion, at the end of his funeral.

Hi, Knockroe - but is the song based on the tune I linked to? When we research a song, it's best if we put all the little pieces together to make the whole, a cooperative research effort instead of a question-and-answer thing.
Where did you hear the song? Might you have seen it in a movie? The text doesn't feel traditional to me. It doesn't feel "crusty" enough for real soldiers to sing. But then, I only got bugle calls for my 8 weeks of basic training. Could it have been songthing composed recently by a singer-songwriter?

Hi, Knockroe-

There is a bugle call called "Lights Out" (not to be confused with "Taps"). Here's a link, although it may not work in all nations:

I checked a number of military songbooks, and didn't find "Lights Out." I hope somebody else finds it.

Looking for origins/composer of song, which I think is titled "Lights Out". It's about young soldiers in WWI (?) going to sleep in a barracks and awakening to shattered dreams. Chorus:

Lights out, lights
The bugle is sounding, the bugle is sounding
Away sounds away
Lights out, lights out
The bugle is calling, the bugle is calling
Lads home all the day
