Two Mudcat Threads here - Origins of John Henry and 9 Pound Hammer.
Incidentally, Charlie Bowman (not Merle Travis) has the songwriting credits for 9 Pound Hammer. Still looking to tease out my subject line - 'Rings Like Silver and Shines Like Gold'

John Henry Origins (mudcat circa 2000)

9 Pound Hammer (Charlie Bowman) Origins - (mudcat 2004)

Roll on Buddy Origins (Alan Lomax LOC Recording) - Clay County, KY 1939

'and it rings like gold'

On a much older thread,
Dick Greenhaus contributed a post.
He states there that
Merle Travis' "Nine Pound Hammer"
is itself a song
whose lyrics come from a number of earlier songs.

But Greenhaus did not spell out any more about those earlier songs.

I bought a new guitar this week and when my son asked how did it play I answered - 'rings like silver and it shines like gold'. Now I know the phrase is attributed to John Henry / 9 Pound Hammer song origins but I wondered if the phrase has a life outside these traditional songs. I guess it's 'all about the hammer' (or getting hammered) so I thought I'd toss this out to Mudcat for comments.
