I agree and one song I can think of in particular is a beautiful ballad from the Beach Boys called, "The Lonely Sea."
It is a lesser known song that many people do not even know about and Brian Wilson wrote it in the early 60's. Lyrics are beautiful and full of sadness. Can be heard on Youtube. Not pop sounding at all but just an eloquently written song and lovely melody.

Yes, but try not to sound so much like an opera singer. Sing gently and tenderly. If you have a mandolin, that would be great.

just sing the song your own way- doesn't matter where it came from- if you do it well & anyone objects, well you can't please everyone

Yes, he has a very good voice. I think his falsetto in the song is a mistake though, it's not especially strong or sweet. Compare with:

Here's a bit about the origins of the song from https://www.definitions.net/definition/cara%20mia:

"Cara Mia" is a popular song published in 1954 that became a UK number 1 and US number 10 hit for English singer David Whitfield in 1954 and a #4 hit for the American pop group Jay and the Americans in 1965. Jay & The Americans' version went into the charts in the Netherlands when it was re-released in 1980. The title means "my beloved" in Italian.

My Great Song Thesaurus says words and music were by Trulio Tranpani and Lee Lange, 1954. Was it first written in Italian? Not much in Wikipedia.
