Subject: RE: Colin Irwin -tribute to Margaret Barry From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 25 Apr 18 - 04:58 AM You could probably make contact via Ian Anderson of Froots magazine. Colin was a regular contributor at one time. Probably still is. Another possible contact is though Fledgling Records. You could also try The EFDSS at Cecil Sharp House. I think they still have a slight connection to folk music there. |

Subject: RE: Colin Irwin -tribute to Margaret Barry From: GUEST,Mike Yates Date: 25 Apr 18 - 09:36 AM Odd coincidence - I was listening to a recording of Margaret Barry singing "The Turfman from Ardee" when I saw the title of this thread! I saw her sing several times in London. Apparently a number of Irish folk music "experts" didn't like her, because she accompanied herself on the banjo. Personally, I loved her singing! |
Subject: RE: Colin Irwin -tribute to Margaret Barry From: GUEST,jim bainbridge Date: 25 Apr 18 - 10:42 AM Yes, spot on- her banjo style was unique & essential to her singing! I saw her several times & bought a cassette of her about 20 years ago because it had a few songs I'd not heard her do on her LPs. Some eejit had added a full band (and a totally insensitive one) to her voice_ I also once heard an ignorant RTE FM2 DJ giggle and announce with the usual pop drivel- 'is this the worst singer in the world?-hee hee giggle'- it was Maggie singing Myy Lagan Love'- I gave up listening to radio folk programmes after that!! |
Subject: RE: Colin Irwin -tribute to Margaret Barry From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 26 Apr 18 - 05:45 AM David Attenborough in a programme about his early days at BBC Television told a lovely story about an appearance by Margaret in a folk music programme in which he was involved. It's an amusing story but by no fault of her own it could have been seeing this performance that formed the opinion of the Irish folk music "experts" referred to above. |

Subject: RE: Colin Irwin -tribute to Margaret Barry From: GUEST,Mike Yates Date: 26 Apr 18 - 10:45 AM Hoot - I think it was the fact that, at the time, she was not viewed as "traditional" by the Irish powers that be, who were then more concerned with supporting Sean-nos singers. |
Subject: RE: Colin Irwin -tribute to Margaret Barry From: Thomas Stern Date: 26 Apr 18 - 12:29 PM Thanks to all for suggestions for contacting Colin - am now in touch. Also thanks to those who have posted about Margaret Barry as a performer and phenomenon! Margaret Barry is a fascinating performer - there are numerous recordings and youtube clips. If you enjoy raw powerful street singer performers, give her a listen! Cheers, Thomas. |
