Do any of you perform under a nickname or an assumed/stage name?

Did you choose your name, was it given by a friend or relative, was it given by an agent/manager/promoter, or did listeners/admirers start calling you something other than your given name?

It was easy back in the day... "Blind So-and-So", because, well, you're blind.
"Big Mama" Thornton - a robust specimen, to be sure.

If you do use a different name, is it a nickname like "The Boss" or is it a nom de plume, so to speak, like Robert "Bob Dylan" Zimmerman?

I know a Medical specialist who uses his first & middle name as his stage name to keep his work & folk lives separate.

An academic divided her folk life from her work life by performing under her birth name.

Another performer's nickname (the name of his home town) is so well known in the folk scene probably only his mother calls or called him by his birth name.

I thought about it, very briefly, several years ago...and in the end, I realised my ego wouldn't permit it. I do know several folks who do, some for genuinely serious reasons, and others just because they wanted to.

I perform under the name of Joe Offer. People assume it's a stage name...

My many fans seem to think I perform under an assumed name, for some reason.

Whenever I appear on stage, they start screaming, "Ged Orff! Ged Orff!"

Geoff Higginbootom (real name) was once billed as 'Geroff' Higginbottom :-)

I remember "Geroff" Higinbottom when he worked in a bank for a living. I also know Stanley Accrington's real name but I'm not telling (no, it's not Alexander Crewe!)

Stan was telling me he has been commissioned to do some poetry and prose for his teams promotion to league division 1. Should be good :-)

I won't tell either ;-)

Wonder if there is a Scottish equivalent called Patrick Thistle?

I knew a Country and Western singer called Wells Fargo but that was just his stage name.

More problem finding band names that haven't been taken before, than personal nommes d'etage. My friend and I have appeared as the Crazy Cousins (with a nod to the Silly Sisters). I drew the line at being Krazy Kousins - too much like a Krispy Kreme doughnut!
Then at Girvan Trad Music Festival each year they have a very unserious Folk Band competition: we entered as "Loosely Connected": next year, with slight change of line-up we were "Even more Loosely Connected" and by 3rd year "Just Falling Apart".

I know a folksinger who often appeared in Seattle that used two different names. One was his real (legal) name, and he used his other name when he performed in coffee houses. In years past, the Seattle musicians union forced it's members to NEVER perform anywhere for less money than the union minimum. Coffee houses paid much less, if at all … hence his "stage name." It was a widely known secret. bob(deckman)nelson

Krazy Kousins might also make people think you are Kardashians?

In the seventies when cassette tapes were in vogue I thought it might be an idea to form a band called "Head Cleaner".

I've used Tone-deaf Lime Clinton as a soubriquet when murdering the blues. I always liked the line :"I use a stage name for security reasons...social security reasons."
