Subject: Obit: Gren Blatherwick, Nottingham UK
From: GUEST,Bradfordian
Date: 19 Jun 18 - 06:37 AM

“ Gren Blatherwick, one of the founding members of Carrington Triangle Folk Club in Nottingham, and a great character of the Nottingham (UK) folk scene for many, many years, passed away on Saturday. He had struggled with poor health for many years and so his presence around the music scene had waned somewhat but he will certainly be remembered very fondly by all who knew him. Such a welcoming, funny and warm man.
Sincere condolences to Margaret and his family and friends on their sad loss.”

Before Carrington, he was involved with the Nottingham Traditional Muscic Club. He will be fondly remembered for his renditions of the Shippo’s song (Shipston’s Brewery) his calypso version of wild rover and “Carrington” Ladies Magical Circle -amongst many others.
Any of you who may have dropped in to the club on a Wednesday night on your travels or as a performer will, I’m sure remember his geniality
RIP Gren

Bradfordian (CTFC member)

Very sad news indeed; Gren was very friendly and welcoming when we first moved down to Nottingham 40 years ago. A tireless club organiser and a unique character. RIP.

Sorry to learn of the death of Grenville. He was indeed a real character. I remember sometimes seeing him riding around on his motorbike in the 1970's and early 1980's with a sort of sandwich board on his back advertising the Co-Op Folk Club. It met in the Radford/Lenton area (somewhere around Hartley Road, in a large pub room with an arcade of red and white candy stripe pillars around the walls, though I now forget the name).

A favourite song of his at that time (the early Thatcher years of soaring unemployment), which I will always associate with him, was the one that had a chorus that goes

If yer can't get work
Yer can't get the sack
An argument that's sensible and sound.
So, lay back on your piller
And read yer Daily Mirrer
And wait till the work cooms raand.

Then there were the tasty and ludicrously cheap vegetable curries at the Gladstone folk club - I seem to recall 20p or maybe 40p - which he had a pivotal hand in organising.

As others have said, Gren was a friendly and welcoming guy. He will be much missed.

Gren provided the chickpea curries right up to his reluctant retirement as club MC around 3 years ago, though the curries have been free in the time of my 20 years association with the club. Incidently, the curries are still made every week by a rota of members and are still free to all attendees. Gren graduated to a small aged motor home which was frequently seen parked around Whitby at festival time.
When singing "Spencer the rover" he would have Woodbine and Park Drive growing all round the door. It was his way to add the odd little nuance to some of his renditions.

Dear Gren, and we used to call him the time lord, because at the time he looked so young
