Just over a month before my better half and I go to Nova Scitia for a holiday. We are still looking, without much success, for folk clubs/sessions we can visit. Any advice, useful web sites etc?

Whereabouts in Nova Scotia are you going?
Antigonish - Townhouse Brewpub has a weekly Celtic session. Paddy's Pub in Kentville and Wolfville both have the same thing, Celtic jams every week. There would be a lot on Cape Breton Island. I'm based in Truro, NS myself with family roots in Antigonish.

It's a pity you're missing the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival which begins August 8th. Judy and I will be there, for the first time in some 10 years. It's a great Festival for sampling what's going on with music in Canada.

We are staying in Hubbards so looking for anywhere around there and Halifax - but we are also staying 2 nights in Sydney when we visit Cape Breton Island

Antigonish would be a bit of a trek getting back at night, but Kentville or Wolfville would be a possibility is we tie it in with a visit to Bay of Fundy.

There's more and better music in Cape Breton than anywhere else on earth! Highest per capita ownership of violins ... concerts and dances every night ...

I have found some bars listed in Halifax that seem akin to bars in Temple bar in Dublin, and are predominantly Celtic Music, so this could be a plan B, as I wold really like to listen to traditional/contempary Canadian music/song.

In Sydney, Govenors pub has a pretty good session on Wednesdays. Gillian Head is a great fiddler that plays there. It's just across from the Holiday Inn and Cambridge Suites.

Most of the dances and trad music is found in Inverness County. Do a search. The best dances are at Brook Village, West Mabou, and the famous Glencoe. The Red Shoe Pub in Mabou has live music in the summer. A fun spot.

In Halifax, the Old Triangle has live music every night. The college crowd don't hang out there like some of the other pubs.

If in Halifax on Sept 4th, the lovely and talented Tommy Emmanuel is playing at the Dalhousie Arts Centre. Tickets are very reasonable and he is the greatest guitarist/entertainer you'll see. Look him up if unsure.

One of my favorite memories is listening to a band in Halifax doing a rousing rendition of Barrett's Privateers and announcing that indeed we were singing on a Halifax Pier! What a lovely city on a lovely part of the planet.

Also at the Old Triangle: A session/open-mike on Tuesdays - supposed to be not bad - Jimmy Sweeney & Kevin Roach on Wed. & Thurs. - well worth taking in.

I would recommend a GPS or navigation app for getting around Halifax, btw ... !

I have a GPS app on my smart phone, but I am not sure how quickly it would use up my contract live data allowance in Canada. Meself? doyou have the venues address, and do the musicians you recommend perform predominantly Canadian or Irish music?-

I am going into Central London today to buy a Nova-Scotia guide book and map.

Louis Benoit & Dave MacIsaac are doing pretty much solid Cape Breton music these days. Louis plays back-up guitar; Dave picks out fiddle tunes on acoustic and electric guitar, and plays fiddle.

Jimmy Sweeney is an Irish singer/guitarist in the Clancy Brothers vein (I believe he is related to that family). Kevin Roach plays anything with strings, including fiddle, Irish-style.
