The August Press Room Shanty, Forebitter, and Foc's'l Ballad Session-In-Exile will be this Saturday, August 18th from 3:30 to 7:30 at the Continental Restaurant & Bar -- just north of Dover 2 blocks from the intersection of Rtes. 108 and Rte. 9. See previous threads for address and directions.

For consistency and ease is searching for past threads, I'm continuing to refer to the session in the header as "Press Room" even though we're meeting for the time being at the Continental north of Dover and not in Portsmouth. I toured the Press Room last week -- with the aid of one of the owners and a copy of the plans -- but it looks to me like it's not going to be open by the end of August as they'd hoped. While they are being both referential and reverential in their rethinking of the space, it will be considerably different from the old floorplan. That being said, I'm pretty sure we'll be able to take the shanty sing back "home" sometime in the next month or two.

At the Continental, there's plenty of FREE parking, handicapped access, lots of seating, good acoustics, Guinness on draft, and Chinese food and buffet. We're in the function room just off the bar -- turn left at the saltwater aquarium, then turn right into the function room.

I'm back from my road trip and other adventures.

This morning I started reading "Dangerous Work" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle -- his journal when he was a twenty-year-old medical student (1880) and signed on as surgeon on the S.S. Hope, a whaler in the Greenland Fishery out of Peterhead.

Dangerous Work - Review

I'm only about 30 pages into the book, but he's mentioned singing aboard ship several times.

Ooo. I want to read that book!
I just went to RI's libraries' site and looked for it. It seems that in my state, there is only one copy of the book. It's in a nearby town. I frequently go to that library; it's near a small market I like to shop at. I just reserved reserved the book, but because today I've just started a light novel, I asked that Doyle's book be sent to my own town's library. I'll be ready to read it when it arrives, and the state's library funding scheme is based partly on the number of books borrowed at each library, so I hope it is credited to mine. I live in a poor small town where many of the mills shut down when manufacturing moved south. The other town is the second wealthiest in the state. We can barely afford to keep our library functioning--in fact several years ago it cut back drastically on hours. In the summer, it's closed on Saturdays, and year-round it is only open 3 evenings/week. That's far fewer hours than the other one.

So do we, Dianne. The question of the day was "Where's Dianne?"!
#29 is "The Greenland Whale" from the journal of the whaleship "Bengal", 1833. I need to keep the titles straight so I know which version I sang when I go back to the song lists, Linn. It WAS a good session!

I'm just really glad to know that these lists I make of what we sang are useful to others.

I know Charley Noble likes reading them to see what he missed...but, hmmm, we all might benefit more if he'd take some time out of his busy life to come to the session. (Hint, hint, Charley -- you've been missed.)
