Don't know why it came back. The song is called "When I Can't Play." Don't know who wrote it, but it was performed by a lady named Joan MacIsaac. Wanna hear it, goes like this. WHEN I CAN'T PLAY
CHORUS: When I can't play, I'll sing.
He picked up the picture and smiled when he said,
When I was a young lad so dashing and proud,
But life has a way of changing things, Chorus: When I can't play...
Well, I haven't seen him for a number of years, Chorus: When I can't sing... (twice) |

Subject: RE: need help 2 songs From: Jim Dixon Date: 11 Dec 00 - 06:03 PM The song referred to above is actually called "When I Can't Play." It was written by Joan MacIsaac (note correct spelling). It was recorded by Joan MacIsaac on "Wintersong" (World Music 2236), 1982; and by Kevin Woodward on "Free." Better late than never (I hope). |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: When I Can't Play (Joan MacIsaac) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 03 Apr 08 - 04:49 PM I will make a cd from the LP, Wintersong, by Joan MacIsaac, and send it to Peter. The album, recorded in 1982, is copyright Mad Mansion Music, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; World Records WRC1-2236 The words posted by fulurum are correct. On the album sleeve, Joan MacIsaac wrote this introduction: "Awhile ago, while on my way to Peace River, Alberta, I met a gas station attendant who told me that at one time he had been quite a good guitar player. However, fate had intervened and he developed a serious form of arthritis which primarily affected his hands and eventually he was forced ti give up the guitar. This man made a deep impression on me, for, despite his pain he was still thankful for being able to listen to and appreciate music." The band for the album is unnamed, but seems to have been a group that called itself the "Gorilla Band." On the album, players were Joan MacIsaac - vocals, high string & acoustic guitar Lyall Steel- electric and 12-string guitar Christopher Lewis- 5 string banjo Allan Davison- base. There are several good lyrics on the album; I think "The Harvest Excursion" is the only one that was picked up by other Canadian Groups. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: When I Can't Play (Joan MacIsaac) From: GUEST,djosephp Date: 05 Oct 09 - 11:09 PM Joan MacIssac passed away back in the early 90's I believe at far too young an age. I saw her play twice, in 1982 in Saskatoon opening for Connie Kaldor and a few years later at the Copper Kettle in Regina. She had a tremendous voice and stage presence. Her brother played bass with her that night. Check out her ode to Peter Mansbridge, The Man Who Reads the News. Wintersong was unfortunately her only release and was pre-CD. DJ |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: When I Can't Play (Joan MacIsaac) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 06 Oct 09 - 01:20 PM Wintersong is a treasured LP in my collection. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: When I Can't Play (Joan MacIsaac) From: GUEST,pengrafyx Date: 08 Dec 09 - 02:42 PM I love Wintersong, too. I saw Joan once ... in a most amazing concert ... small venue, and she was fabulous. When she didn't become famous, I knew she must have passed away - cause there was no way this woman was anything but brilliant and destined for greatness. I still sing to myself the songs from that album ... The Man Who Reads the News is a good song, as is Harvest Train, but my sentimental favourites are Wintersong and Mother How Pretty the Moon is Tonight (sorry, can'r remember the exact title at this moment, and I'm not at home to check the album). I love that she's still being appreicated. :) - Penelope |

Subject: Lyr Add: I HOVER OVER (Joan MacIsaac) From: GUEST,D. Attwater Date: 30 May 10 - 03:34 PM I hover over your left shoulder I am the sunlight in your eyes Though you don't know it I'm right with you In the shadow that is walking by your side. The miles between us - they don't mean a thing We conquered them so many years ago I hover over your left shoulder And I just wanted you to know... I hover over your left shoulder I'm in the wind that rocks the trees My thoughts are with you no matter where you are And I even say "God Bless You" when you sneeze. In the dark or daylight I'll always be around Though you may not know that I'm nearby I hover over your left shoulder I am the sunlight in your eyes ... I hover over your left shoulder I sing a song to you each day In times of sorrow I will comfort you Though I may be twenty thousand miles away. It may sound silly and impossible But what I'm saying really is quite true I hover over your left shoulder And it's all because I think so much of you. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: When I Can't Play (Joan MacIsaac) From: GUEST,MacIsaac Date: 05 Nov 10 - 03:34 AM I realize this is quite an old thread, although it appears there have been resurgences recently. I came across it and felt compelled to write something. Joan MacIsaac was my aunt and she passed away in 1991. I was only two years old so I really have no memory of her, but I still feel like her and her music has had a lasting impression on me. My dad was her bass player for a number of years, and they did a lot of touring together. I've heard many stories over the years of the long road trips to small town bars and the mishaps and hilarities along the way, enjoying (and hating) each others company in ways only a brother and sister could. One of his highlights while playing with her was their trip to Japan where they played at the Canadian pavilion for Expo '85. I've always enjoyed her albums, and have only recently come to appreciate her witty lyrics and soaring vocals. I am especially fond of "Oh Mother How Pretty" since it was my favorite lullaby that my mother sang to me when I was a child. I only wish that she was still alive so that I could really have gotten to know who my aunt was. Knowing aunt Joan only through photos, stories, and music, she takes on somewhat of a mythical presence in my head. Judging by the continued interest in her music today, if she was still around to write beautiful music many people would take notice. |

Subject: RE: Joan MacIsaac From: GUEST,MG Date: 19 Nov 10 - 12:25 PM I remember seeing and hearing Joan in Edmonton back in the early 80's as well. Met her at an outdoor concert and she was as friendly and nice as they come. She did a song with her brother that had us in stitches but it was not on her LP. Pity...it was wonderful. I think it was called "I love you" but not 100% sure on that. We talked about her doing another LP and she said that she hoped she could one day but unfortunately it was not to be. She deserved the recognition then and it is wonderful that people are still showing an interest in her music today. MG |
Subject: Lyr Add: HARVEST EXCURSION (Joan MacIsaac) From: GUEST,MG Date: 24 Nov 10 - 12:28 PM Hello Joan MacIsaac fans. I have just got the words to Harvest Excursion however I am not clear on a couple of lines. The one is where she sings...'as the land of the golden ???? I think it is pelt but not sure. And last verse, third line. Anybody know these for sure? Here are the words from listening to the song. Thanks for any help you can give. Oh...and if you have the chords that would be FANTASTIC! HARVEST EXCURSION - Joan MacIsaac Oh, hark and listen to the whistle of the train. We're pulling from the station for the land of the golden grain, But when we return again our friends will drink our health, But there's no place here with such cheer, as the land of the golden pelt. O Molly dear, I greatly fear that soon I will be gone. I'm going away on a harvest train, to the far Saskatchewan. Streets of rain on the western plan, where the Buffalo used to roam, And I leave you alone in your island home, my dear Colleen bawn. O Molly dear, when night is here and I am far away, With willing heart you'll do your part and for me you will pray. When the pigs are fed, they go to bed and the kids play on the lawn, Then you heave a sigh for your absent boy, in the far Saskatchewan. O Molly dear, dry up your tears. I'll soon be home again With pockets lined with the gold I find in the fields of the golden grain, And never more I'll go a soar in the far Saskatchewan And leave you here, my Molly dear, in your little island home. Oh, hark and listen to the whistle of the train. We're pulling from the station and we're homeward bound again, And when we do return gain, our friends will drink our health, For there's no place here where there is such cheer, As the land of the golden pelt...Land of the golden pelt. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: When I Can't Play (Joan MacIsaac) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 24 Nov 10 - 02:58 PM The Harvest Excursion- words and music by Dan Somers, arranged Joan MacIsaac. Pelt it is. Commonly user for coat, or cover, in western Canada, where the pelt of animals also is harvested. In the 4th verse- And nevermore I'll go a'soar to the far Saskatchewan. The apostrophe left out. She got a bit inventive here, or the word is a Saskatchewanism I haven't heard. |

Add: YOU DROWN IN RAIN Music and lyrics by Joan MacIsaac I watch you stumble and fall I hear you call I see the hurt in your eyes You can't disguise. I want to help you so much But you don't feel my touch And try as I might It's not right. I watch as you writhe wih the pain You drown in rain There's no more peace in your heart It's torn apart. I want to help you stand tall But you don't listen at all And do as I may There's no way. I know that you are angry and scared You're unprepared You say that you can't cope anymore And close the door. I want to help pull you through But now it's all up to you And here I will stand- Take my hand. Copyright 1982 Mad Mansion Music. |

Subject: Lyr Add: MISTER, YOU STOLE THAT SONG (MacIsaac) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 24 Nov 10 - 05:23 PM MISTER, YOU STOLE THAT SONG Music by Joan MacIsaac, lyrics by Tom Lips Chorus: Mister, hey mister, you stole that song from me I don't care if you say you wrote it back in 1963 You say that it was bought and sold When I was only eight years old But I don't care- it's me in there. Mister, you stole that song from me. You must think that I'm deaf and blind To steal my song and to read my mind I heard you singing late last night It puzzled me that the words were right I might have known The words were all my own. Chorus Don't know how you ever dared To sing a song that I never shared And I know where you got the part About a man who broke a woman's heart And went away That happened yesterday. Subject: Lyr Add: WINTERSONG (Lips, MacIsaac) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 24 Nov 10 - 05:40 PM WINTERSONG Music by Joan MacIsaac, lyrics by Tom Lips You gave your summer love to me I know how much it cost But now the earth is cold And the branches white with frost And autumn's just a memory Of leaves upon the ground And colors swept away Without a sound. And when we both have turned away And when we both have sinned Will you fly before the winter Like a feather on the wind. You filled me up with mystery You gave me what I lack But now the ground is white And you'll never take me back And all our love is history Of battles lost and won So there's no better time To break and run. And when we both have turned away And when we both have sinned Will you fly before the winter Like a feather on the wind. You gave your summer love to me But summers always pass And now your love is cold As patterns on the glass The seasons circle endlessly The winter melts away I never felt the cold Until today.
