A heads up for those who might be interested. At 11.pm tonight on BBC4 Andras Schiff plays JS Bach. The TV Listing bumf says;

The two volumes of Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier are a window on to an extraordinary musical imagination - an infinitely varied, beguiling series of musical reflections and questions. Much more than just a musical sequel, this volume pushes harmony and counterpoint further than ever before in its fascinating and uniquely challenging sequence of works. I'll be the wrong side of a bottle of Zinfandel by then but I'll be tuned in.

I'm a big fan of András Schiff. I have his recording of the Goldberg Variations, a wonderful version, and I often listen to his entertaining YouTube analyses of Beethoven sonatas, which I believe were recorded in the Wigmore Hall. I'll be the wrong side of a bottle of Negroamaro by then but I'll also be tuned in. By the way, to us Italophiles Zinfandel is just Primitivo wrapped up in Yankee talk!

Primitivo and Negroamaro are the two major wine grapes of Puglia in the south of Italy. When you're there you can buy either very cheaply and get great quality. Puglia is lovely, and not quite overrun by tourism as yet. Quite a lot of cheaper Primitivo from Italy is fairly stern stuff. The Peuceta from Lidl at £4.99 is a steal, and Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Primitivo from Salento is very nice, usually at about seven quid, or six on offer. If you like Primitivo you'll love Negroamaro. By far the best cheapie is Asda's Wine Atlas Negroamaro at £5.68. M&S Negroamaro, with its very subdued label, is a beauty, but it's eight quid, so we wait until it's 25% off six before stocking up. Any of the aforementioned will enhance the Bach experience, as long as not overdone...

Thanks for the heads-up but I won't be able to hear the performance down-under.

J.S. Bach is one of my faves and some of the pieces in The Well Tempered Clavier are the bomb.

I'll check out Andras Schiff.

If you have buddies in the UK, Helen, get them to record stuff from the telly on to DVD. I think Oz is the same DVD region as the UK. We record lots of stuff, mainly BBC drama series, and send them to Mrs Steve's old aunt in Perth. She loves it!

My very favourite Proms YouTube is Manuel de Falla's ballet TheThree-Cornered Hat from a couple of years ago. A real treat! I must have watched it at least three times.

Wow. Two hours and twenty minutes of uninterested JS Bach. Seemingly effortless expression by Andreas Schiff. No applause until the standing ovation at the end. And not one advert. I'll be coughing up for my TV license next year.

Towards the end I was thinking about that other thread about rules for singarounds and folks not bothering to learn their words... :-) Maybe Schiff is just a tad detached at times but the overall thrust was magnificent. I kept hearing bits that must definitely have influenced Mozart and Beethoven...

I'm never completely sure that Bach would have approved of modern concert grands....

Next time I think I'll put myself the wrong side of two bottles...

I think it was supposed to read 'uninterrupted JS Bach' rather than 'uninterested'

Two hours plus of remembered musical material and not a ring binder in sight.

I love the meditative jazz forms of Bach. Hey Steve besides Bach, Jacque Lousier does variations on Beethoven as well. The 7th symphony was pretty nice. I do the cello suites on Ukelele now.

Helen, Thanks for that. I didn't get to see all of Book 1 last year. My current Internet is Pay As You Go and I'm not sure how much it will cost me to download the whole file. Maybe someone with unlimited Internet access could tell me the size of the file and then I could make a decision. I played the first few arpeggios. Yes Heaven.
