Subject: RE: BS: MERRY CHRISTMASS From: Night Owl Date: 24 Dec 99 - 11:55 PM alison....re: oranges etc. When my brother and I were small, we always had our Christmas stockings hung at the foot of our beds. Every year they contained an orange, a box of raisins, peanuts in the shells and two small puzzle toys, wrapped. I didn't realize until I became a mother myself....that one GOOD reason for putting oranges etc. in the stocking was so that we could have our "breakfast" before waking up our mother. I have no idea if that was the original intent....BUT it sure did work!!! |

Subject: RE: BS: MERRY CHRISTMASS From: Jon Freeman Date: 25 Dec 99 - 03:39 AM Well, I haven't been to bed yet and I probably should go soon. I opened my pressies just after midnight and have been scoffing sweets (mostly an excellent US import -or is it export?) and consuming my present to myself (1/2 bottle of whiskey and a couple or three cans of the black stuff) since. The whisky is gone now and I suppose it is time to sleep it off but I don't feel tired yet. Just hope I'll be in a fit state for dinner at a friends later... Jon

Subject: RE: BS: MERRY CHRISTMASS From: Jack The Lad Date: 25 Dec 99 - 04:23 AM I too , remember getting a tangerine or mandarine in my pillowcase at the end of the bed on Christmas morn. As a Jew growing up in the UK I wanted it both ways(and why not?) Now here in Israel, I just went into my garden and picked a delicious tangerine straight off the tree. Perhaps we got them then because this is the tangerine season in the Holy Land, and perhaps it was because they were so rare in England. Whatever, Merry Christmas to you all from me Mev a new mudcatter and glad to have found you. |

Subject: RE: BS: MERRY CHRISTMASS From: Áine Date: 25 Dec 99 - 08:18 AM It's just after 7 a.m. here in Texas, and the hubby and children are still asleep in their beds, a situation I'm sure that will not last long. Santa has come and I've lit the tree lights in anticipation of the morning's excitement. So, before I'm called to 'duty', I just wanted to tell all my friends here at the 'Cat to consider yourselves Serendipity's present to me; for I have tried to remember how I came to be here, and I cannot -- but, your friendship has made me ponder and wonder, laugh and cry, sing and shout. I cannot imagine a better gift than that. May you all be blessed with a wonderful and happy New Year. Your serendipitous friend, Áine |

Subject: RE: BS: MERRY CHRISTMASS From: Big Mick Date: 25 Dec 99 - 09:42 AM I am sitting here, it's half nine on Christmas morning. I have read my friend 'Spaw's wonderful poem, and despite his being the biggest smartass I have ever known (and I have known a few), I know how blessed I am to have him. I am watching my 7 year old happily playing with more than she needs, I am looking at this beautiful Franklin Mint Celtic Cross ring that they gave me.........and yet I feel some sadness. Because while I feel the warmth of my family's love and enjoyment, I am thinking of a Mudcatter who doesn't want you all to know how sick she is, and how lonely she feels. I am so afraid that she will give up...................I am thinking of my little kids that I played Santa for, who wouldn't have mittens if good folks didn't donate them.........We have so much that we MUST sing about. We must use our gifts to make a difference, my friends. Think of the talent in this community, if we could find a way to tap it around the world........find a way to make a difference, even if only for some. I know I am rambling, but my mind is swirling at the possibilities of finding a way to tap our collective good will and talent for something good.......I don't know......... Big Mick |

Subject: RE: BS: MERRY CHRISTMASS From: catspaw49 Date: 25 Dec 99 - 10:50 AM Thanks Mick.....not for the "smartass" compliment, but for mentioning others. We talked this morning of kids and Christmas past when we have had a housefull...and some of them we know about and some of them we don't...but all of them we remember. And I assure you the 'Catter is in my thoughts and many others and we all send our best both this day and everyday and hope her choice is not to give up but to give in to the power that this community of spirits can provide. Best to you my good friend....Best to you all. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: MERRY CHRISTMASS From: sophocleese Date: 25 Dec 99 - 12:25 PM That's a great gift skarpi. I'm writing at noon on Christmas Day here. In the background I can hear my kids playing cheerfully with some of their presents. For once they're not running full tilt trying to open everything in sight but are happy with what they've unwrapped. Outside the sky is grey and light snow is falling. The kids said they didn't want roast turkey this year so I have an easier dinner to prepare. I also have a new recorder to play with. Now I just have to get my husband over the flu without the rest of us catching it... MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL MUDCATTERS!! |
Subject: RE: BS: MERRY CHRISTMASS From: bbc Date: 25 Dec 99 - 12:31 PM Well, it took till after noon for me to have a chance to check in, but I wish you all the best of whatever season you celebrate. I am feeling very blessed here. We have the traditional gathering--me, children, fiance & his mom, & former spouse--all invited & harmonious. The best parts of this Christmas, for me, have been the tiny little things I have been able to do for others, which have touched & encouraged them. Pardon me if I wax religious just for a moment. I feel that, lately, God has been showing me that if I am willing to give the simple things that He brings to my mind & heart, that He can multiply the result for the recipient. Whether you believe in the Divine or not, we each can give to others from the wealth of our unique personalities. People in our world are so sorely in need of touch, love, & just being acknowledged as worthy of attention. Yes, I know of the hurting 'catter, too, & am praying. Being private is ok, but many of us are willing & ready to give some support when we know there is an issue. Let's all be humble enough to seek the help we need. And let's all be open to hear the needs of others. So often, a simple touch or word can make a difference for the good in someone's life. Enough preaching for now. Gotta go make the big meal! love to you all from NY, bbc |
Subject: RE: BS: MERRY CHRISTMASS From: bseed(charleskratz) Date: 25 Dec 99 - 01:18 PM Merry Christmas to all my extended family, and best wishes for the last year of the 20th century and the second millenium. My life has become much richer in the last year and a half thanks to all of you, from the oldest (Max, who is less than half my age), to the newcomers who have posted above who already have realized what a magical place this is. Mick, you great sweet compassionate dedicated bear of a man, will you be the channel of our healing thoughts and the bearer of our love to the ailing Muddie you mentioned? The fact she doesn't want to burden us with worries over her illness should not stop us from channeling our feelings and energies her way. I think I might start collecting names and rhymes for an epic Christmas/new millennium poem to be published about a year from now: heroic couplets, of course--Iambic pentameter rhymed aabbccdd etc. It'll probably run a thousand lines or so, if I can squeeze two or three names per line into it--yea, if the 'Cat continues to grow at its present rate, it might be ten thousand lines. I'd better get started. A Muddy Catmas to you all (thanks, Hagbard--that was brilliant) |

Subject: RE: BS: MERRY CHRISTMASS From: Bill D Date: 25 Dec 99 - 01:50 PM Merry Christmas to all...we are off in a couple of hours to the 'folk ghetto' of Silver Spring, MD to spend Christmas with SongBob, Lorraine & hubby George, KathWestra, and others...maybe even Charlie Baum, a good Jewish boy, will drop in and watch the silliness and kibitz on the season..LaMarca & her hubby George are off to relatives, but they will be here for New Years... oh...about those oranges & tangerines!!!..Years ago, when planes flew slowly and winters were cold, citrus fruit was a rare and expensive treat, and thus a very special stocking stuffer at Christmas. Nowdays, when it not so hard to obtain, the tradition sort of continues.... |
