Subject: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: frogprince Date: 11 Nov 18 - 11:45 AM I'm on my third or fourth day of getting "website not responding" almost every time I try to open a thread. No trouble browsing elsewhere. Is everyone getting this? If not, what sort of problem might I have? |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: Stilly River Sage Date: 11 Nov 18 - 12:13 PM I haven't been seeing a slow response lately at Mudcat. Do you have an adblocker or Ghostery installed? Sometimes they will stall a page loading because of ads. And the usual "clear your cache" may make a difference. |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: keberoxu Date: 11 Nov 18 - 02:16 PM Well, I just had trouble with it myself. Don't understand it. But frogprince is speaking the truth. Yes he is. |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: GUEST,Kenny B sans kuki Date: 11 Nov 18 - 02:29 PM Forum & DT search does not appear to be working either |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: GUEST Date: 11 Nov 18 - 11:44 PM Yowza; I cleared most stuff from my cache, got in to a couple of threads, then couldn't even scroll the page without getting the "not responding". Went back and cleared passwords. Now I can get everything here fine, as long as I don't sign in. |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: GUEST Date: 11 Nov 18 - 11:45 PM And yes, that was your local froggy, |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 12 Nov 18 - 01:43 AM you go, froggy. |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: SuperDave Date: 12 Nov 18 - 08:21 AM Something is definitely wrong. I logged in, cleared cookies, etc. but when I go to search, I get a "timed out, server not responding" error. |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: GUEST,frogprince Date: 12 Nov 18 - 10:05 AM Same story today. As a guest, I can do anything except post to BS. I can sign in with no difficulty, but if I do, I'm dead in the water. |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: Stilly River Sage Date: 12 Nov 18 - 12:39 PM I checked with Max, he's working on one of the servers. Be sure that you're going to https://mudcat.org and not trying to target a server in your URL. The specific computer names aren't a good way to get in. |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: SuperDave Date: 13 Nov 18 - 12:23 PM I am using mudcat.org, and I can post and browse, just can't use "lyrics and knowledge search" |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: SuperDave Date: 13 Nov 18 - 12:35 PM Error message: "The server at search.mudcat.org is taking too long to respond." |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: Stilly River Sage Date: 13 Nov 18 - 12:41 PM That's because search is still on Awe. |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: Mr Happy Date: 13 Nov 18 - 12:48 PM 'Awe' played up with me too. Now on 'muddy' |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 14 Nov 18 - 03:36 PM Today, however, 'muddy' is no more help than 'awe.' Here is my tale of woe: I wanted to post about the amicus briefs the news agencies plan to file in support of CNN's Jim Acosta, whose press pass was revoked at the White House. I attempted a Mudcat search on "Acosta" and got "website not responding." Have gone ahead and posted to "forked tongue" BS thread. Then, I tried Joe Offer's frequent suggestion and put "Acosta" into a filter search. All that came up was, 20 Naked Pentecostals In A Pontiac. Because some durned fool spelled it PentAcostAl. |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: SuperDave Date: 14 Nov 18 - 08:05 PM For the time being, I seem to be able to find SOME things by Google, e.g.: Mudcat Ryans Pittmans will give me the Origins: Spanish Ladies thread. Not perfect, but better than nothing. |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: C-flat Date: 15 Nov 18 - 09:21 AM Still nothing from the elves as to why the "search" isn't functioning? I've been trying all week... |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: Stilly River Sage Date: 15 Nov 18 - 11:26 AM Max is working on it. And this might be a good time for folks to click the "DONATE" button on the top of the main page. Just a thought! |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: C-flat Date: 15 Nov 18 - 11:40 AM Thanks for the reminder SRS. It's easy to take this free site for granted and grumble when it's not doing what we think it should. I've made a small donation and hope it contributes in a small way to helping find a fix. |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: C-flat Date: 15 Nov 18 - 11:46 AM Clearly not a simple move. We've had plenty of problems over the years but, given the time it's been off, it must be tricky or expensive (or both) |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 15 Nov 18 - 12:12 PM Actually, selfish of me, but it is a relief to have this acknowledged. For months I have been struggling with the search feature. So I'm relieved to know that this is not all in my head. |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: GUEST,frogprince Date: 21 Nov 18 - 08:14 PM I'm about stumped. I still have the same symptoms. Logged out, I can do anything but post in B.S.. Logged in, I'm lucky to get a look at one thread before I get the "not responding". I have to go away and come back just to have a chance to log out. I don't think the mudkitty wuvs me anymore. (No problems elsewhere on the internet.) |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 21 Nov 18 - 09:00 PM don't wet it get you down, fwoggy |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: DaveRo Date: 22 Nov 18 - 02:27 AM Have you tried a different browser? If you don't have another browser, try Firefox: http://getfirefox.org |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: frogprince Date: 22 Nov 18 - 01:32 PM My thanks to DaveRo: everything works fine with Firefox. The whole ball of wax still seems very weird...has anyone else been 'catting, signed in, with Edge ? |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: keberoxu Date: 23 Nov 18 - 01:27 PM Shades of Hee Haw! where, O! where are you tonight? Why did you leave me here all alone? I searched the world over And I thought I found true love You met another and [BRONX CHEER] you was gone. And from this aisle of the market: thanks be for server Muddy. |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 08 Jun 19 - 11:54 AM Thankfully, Muddy is back and pulling its weight again. |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: Stilly River Sage Date: 08 Jun 19 - 12:59 PM Please stop directing browsers to specific servers. They're not all meant to handle regular traffic. Thanks. |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 08 Jun 19 - 01:07 PM ... but i LIKE directing traffic ... |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: Jeri Date: 08 Jun 19 - 02:11 PM Stop it. Please. |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: John MacKenzie Date: 09 Jun 19 - 04:05 PM Get this happen almost every morning UK time. Website not available. Seems like it goes down in the night US time. Now if I could get something to happen like that in the UK ;) |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: Steve Shaw Date: 09 Jun 19 - 06:53 PM I got a little bollocking a few weeks back for pointing to a specific Mudcat server. I honestly didn't know I was doing anything wrong. I haven't done it since, though Safari defaulted to the server I wasn't supposed to use a couple of weeks ago. It's a bit weird is this. It's all a bit like eating the apple that Eve wasn't supposed to eat but without knowing why not. Why do the Mudcat powers that be leave the website so vulnerable? Not that it bothers me. I can always do a bit of gardening or go to see my old mum when the thing is down... |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 10 Jun 19 - 09:10 AM I don't understand the point, or the objection to, of 'pointing to ' specific servers. I arrive at 'Muddy' right now, on the odd few hours the site is working at all, more often than not it's 'service is unavailable', as it was for at least six hours just now (probably longer but I was still asleep then). |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: Steve Shaw Date: 10 Jun 19 - 09:30 AM Because the server in question was the only one that was at all reliable just before I got my telling-off for using it, that's why. Somebody cleverer than me at these things told us in a post how to pick specific servers, so that's what I did, not realising that I was threatening the whole database by so doing. |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: Jeri Date: 10 Jun 19 - 10:34 AM Mudcat is designed to direct calls for info to a server, so it balances the load. Everybody hitting one server will un-balance things. I'm not sure if the load-balancing thing is effective when there's on one named server working, but I don't generally used a named server because Max asked us not to...obviously, not publicly enough. When everything's working, picking a specific server only ever makes the control freak in us happy. |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: Richard Mellish Date: 10 Jun 19 - 01:06 PM I would much prefer to go in through the official front door -- but when that gives me "Service Temporarily Unavailable!" but I can get straight in through a specific server what else am I going to do? |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: Steve Shaw Date: 10 Jun 19 - 01:31 PM I didn't think that was possible. |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 10 Jun 19 - 01:31 PM You and me, both, Richard Mellish! |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: Stilly River Sage Date: 10 Jun 19 - 02:25 PM Wait. Patiently. One of us will spot the problem and let Max know if he doesn't already know. |
Subject: RE: Tech: mudcat 'not responding' From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 11 Jul 21 - 11:22 PM I hate it when mudcat doesn't respond. There was a football match going on ... |
