I played with him in Sandy Bells a couple of times. Unassuming and friendly bloke, a model of how you can be a star without letting it go to your head.

Sad news indeed. One of the 'big four' responsible for popularising the bouzouki in Irish music. I once chatted with him and Frankie in the crypt of Rochester Cathedral - a genuinely nice bloke.

Ah, a very fine member of De Danann in their glory days...

Really sad news. Before he moved on to Ireland and De Danann, in the mid-1960's, he used to come to play and read 'Beat Poetry' at folk clubs in Rotherham. A very talented man. Deepest sympathies to Gervase and Christine (who taught us 'The Lingering Blues')

OMG!! Nooooooooo

Devastated to hear this. He was a wonderfully sensitive, totally classy musician, as well as an absolute gentleman. And so soon after Mícheál - a double shock this horrible month.

He was also a tremendously talented artist. My favourite DD album sleeve - and it's also in my Top 50 all-time list - is his cover for The Mist-Covered Mountain, depicting a large, disparate variety of birds and animals, all seemingly united in some sort of migratory flight.

What an awful loss to Irish music, and to the world generally. It's getting so I'm afraid to switch on my computer for fear of learning who we lose next.

R.I.P. Alec, we'll miss you. Lucky Heavenly band. Poor us.

Really sad.
His playing was quite distinctive and very much a trademark of Dé Danann as they were known when I first heard their music.
He was also a good friend of Kevin McLeod(The Occasionals) and I saw them play together on quite a few occasions.
Condolences to all Alec’s family and friends.

A very sad loss.

"When I was doing my O-Levels my brother was an outstanding artist. And when I went up to the school the head of art said: ‘Another Phinn, another great artist’," Gervase Phinn, Alec's brother.

Here's an obituary:
https://www.independent.ie/entertainment/music/music-news/alec-finn-cofounder-of-de-dannan-has-died-37535563.html
Aoife Kelly

Alec Finn has died peacefully at home with his family in Galway.

The co-founder of the hugely successful Galway-based group De Dannan passed away at 1am on Friday November 16 surrounded by his wife Leonie and his family.

Tributes have been pouring in on social media for the talented musician, artist, arranger and producer of music.

Singer Mick Brown shared a clip of Alec playing the bouzouki while TV producer Ciarán Ó Maonaigh said, "It was an honour and a privilege to work with Alec on the recent ‘Sé Mo Laoch. His bouzouki playing was unique and he has left an indelibly colourful sonic imprint on Irish Traditional and Folk music."

Broadcaster John Kelly wrote on Twitter, "Sad news. I’m very sorry to hear of the death of Alec Finn. We have lost so many of the greats in recent times. Another one gone."

Alec Finn was born in England but made his home in Galway. He founded De Dannan with Frankie Gavin, Johnny 'Ringo McDonagh' and Charlie Piggott in Galway in 1975 and performed with the group until they split in 2003.

In recent years he performed with the band with varying line-ups and earlier this year he appeared on stage with Frankie Galvin, Colm Murphy, and Máirtín O’Connor as De Dannan to play out TG4’s Gradam Awards

He also trained the falcons used in the 1969 film "Alfred the Great".

I'm cheekily posting Tony Rees' link from Ralphie's obit thread, because there's a pic of Alec in there too - you have to scroll about 2/3rds of the way down (cheers, Tony!):

Inspirational. Alec Finn was by far my favourite bouzouki player, an accompanist who understood the tune was key and whose playing enhanced the music. He heard the subtle rhythms of the music and never competed with the tune playing instruments. RIP.

I mainly know his work with Kevin Macleod. It was an amazing partnership, they sounded like a single instrument.
