We are due in Barcelona soon and as social folk dancers wanted to see the Sadanes.

I have located one that is scheduled a bit to the north of Basilica Gaudí in the Avinguda de Gaudí.

Anyone seen these or tried to participate?

In Girona ( about an hour north of Barcelona) we saw the dance practically every evening. The tourist information people might know details. Or I could ask friends in Barcelona if they know the location of locals dancing?

Do they still dance outside the cathedral every Sunday lunchtime?
Not a formal performance in costumes, just people dancing because that's what they do.

I've seen that Sunday afternoon one, I imagine it's still going on when the square isn't otherwise occupied with people in yellow and thugs with riot gear. You find sardanas all over the place.

Ball de bastons is much closer to morris than sardana is, but it's more a rural and small town thing.

You oughta try to hear a cobla performing - they play for sardana but also in concert. They range in technical ability up to a similar level as the best British brass bands.

Also nice music and dance sessions at 22.00 on Friday evenings in "placa del rei". Not a Sardana venue but they are very friendly and someone there might know more about the "placa cathedral" Sunday dancers - could even get you an invitation!

it looks like we will be there when the Monday is a Catalan national holiday. That guia.barcelona.cat website lists things before & after but not the weekend we will be there. The Avinguda de Gaudí is pedestrianised, at least Goggle Earth shows it to be. I have it bookmarked on the Maps.me app on my phone (the one without a SIM). We will be doing the tour of the Segrada Familia at some time, a must for any tourist in Barcelona.

My mother took videos of it and other Gaudí architecture in the 50s, we stayed at home as kids. So it is a sort of pilgrimage to memories of childhood.

There is only one Sardana listed on the internet that I can find for the Sunday in Barcelona when we will be there. We have to go with what we know.

And not speaking Castilian or Catalan, it is going to be an experience. But then I managed a week of French dancing bal/workshops in Gennetines, some languages need little translation. Except 10/11 Waltze! I can manage 5 time, but 11 time? - I didn't.

My understanding of the sardana is that it is not a good idea to try to join in unless you really know how to dance it. (It's not your average 'ceilidh dance')
But I might be out of date on that

I was encouraged to join in one of these Sunday afternoon dances when I visited the area 25 years ago. Each dance seems to have slightly different steps and, apparently, you take your clue by the length of the intro given by the cobla. It wasn't easy and I couldn't seem to relate it to any circle or chain dances I'd done before.

I am sure we will play it by ear. Look and absorb.

As for joining in, well, the experience with Latvian, Swedish, Breton, Basque, Thracian/Macedonian/Balkan etc is to try a workshop first. And even if there were time, the workshops are limited over a pubic holiday weekend.

cool. i think i will be in barcelona in late march. probably will base in madrid as places i want to go involve madrid. will spent a bit of time on the Compestella Santiago but no plans for a complete pilgrimage at this time. Any suggestions welcome. Got a 22 day unlimited railpass.
