I'm looking for sheet music or MIDI file for cakewalks, which are dance pieces from maybe 1890-1910. When I google, all I get is stuff from the Cakewalk software people. (I used Google advanced search and said -software. The first page that came up said Cakewalk Software.)

A true cakewalk ought to be simpler than a rag. I am not interested in stuff by Scott Joplin in several flats with huge leaps, etc.

I already know Colored Aristocracy. Can anybody suggest any more?

Other sheet music repositories probably have them too, but I haven't time to check just now. But here are some results from the Sheet music consortium that you can browse through.

Thanks, Mike. I already tried Levy. For some reason, the site will not only display a page of music about half size. I have used Levy often in the past, but now it is no help.

Also, I was hoping for something simpler to use, like an ABC or a MIDI file. Something like Colored Aristocracy.

Leeneia - for low-bandwidth screen display for people who are just looking, Levy displays *.jpg files that print out to about half a page. But note that Levy now has a "download PDF" link that downloads the whole song in printable form. Once you get used to it, it's much easier to use. Give it a try. -Joe Offer-

Sorry misunderstood!

Abc for others might be hard to come by (my search found only 1 modent one from Australia!).

But (if I count correctly) there are about 125 of the 155 sheet music entries that I linked for you above at the Sheet music consortium that are available for download. If you find some you like I'd be happy to convert them to abc for you.

Now look. I went to abc notation.com first thing and searched for "cakewalk" and "cake walk." They said they couldn't find any. Then FreddieHeadey comes along and they come up with a dozen. Explain THAT, Mr. Scientist!

Setting that glitch aside, I have no added Cosgrove's Cakewalk and Whistling Rufus to my repertoire. Cosgrove's seems to have a connection to Mudgee (a place) so it will make a nice companion to the Mudgee Waltz.

It's probably my computer. It's getting old and developing glitches.

I've been playing the Cosgrove Calkewalk. Sad to say, it fails to grip. Next, Whistling Rufus.

Here's a YouTube video from 1903 which I think conveys a cakewalk pretty well. It also has some history in the comments.

Mike, it just clicked with me, what you said about a consortium. I googled Sheet Music Consortium and found the home page. What a site! I have added to my Favorites.

Whistling Rufus is coming along nicely. Another cakewalk called Chaw Roast beef shows promise.

The Wikipedia Article on "cakewalk" is fascinating. I knew Louis Moreau Gottschalk wrote music in the cakewalk style, but the Wikipedia article says that Robert Russell Bennett, John Philip Sousa, and Claude Debussy also wrote pieces in the style.
