I'm very sorry to hear that. I first encountered Tim as a member of "De Dannan", at a concert they gave in Dundee, circa 1978 - shame he never recorded with them. He had a great store of comic songs, as well as being a superb ballad singer. A very fine melodeon player as well. I got to know him a bit better when he toured Scotland with Fintan Vallely, and they played Aberdeen Folk Club a few times in the mid- 80s. An absolute gentleman, a great character with great musical talent and especially wit. A great loss to Irish traditional music - a tragic start to 2019. My condolences to his family and friends.
May he rest in peace.

A truly great and dedicated singer who seems to have been around forever
He inspired me to take an interest in Irish song as, I am, sure he did others, in Ireland and in the U.K.

One of the truly great Irish singers, Tim Lyons. I heard him first on that superb album on the Trailer label, "The Green Linnet". I was overwhelmed by the quality of the singing on that album - and even more so when I heard him live.

I am shocked and saddened by this news. I still sing songs I learned 30 years ago from Tim. Another great voice gone.

an unusual story re Tim Lyons: https://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/trad-singer-sues-historian-over-alcoholic-slur-201433.html because of a photograph of the singer with a pint which was used as a book illustration without his knowledge or consent.

Very sorry to hear this bad news. I saw Tim many times from 1966 onwards and we booked him three times at Traditions at the Tiger, two of which occasions he stayed with us. A fine singer, musician and storyteller and not a bad songwriter either. RIP Tim.

Another loss of a fine singer. Like Vic Smith I first heard Tim Lyons via his superb Trailer LP, "The Green Linnet". On record or live at Whitby, his singing was exceptional - an inspiration.

I’m very sad to hear this. He was a wonderful, wide-ranging artist whom I’ve admired for decades. May he rest in peace - or else in great activity, playing up a storm in heaven.

I think I only heard Tim live once, in the 70s, at a club that I only went to that once in order to hear him. But I have at least one of his songs in my repertoire. And I only recently bought the CD of him and his brother. Another fine singer gone. Very sad.

Very sad news, what a lovely man, quite apart from his musical ability.
First met him in the mid sixties, on his 7 day tour of the Tyneside area, where he played a club every night. As a GD 'melodeon' player, I couldn't work out how Tim was achieving an acceptable bass on his chromatic box, so I asked him- he said (and I've never forgotten it)

'Jasus, I don't know, I look the other way'

Coming across him a few years ago in Roscommon on the launch of the excellent CD he did with brother John & family, I was delighted when he said he loved his trips to Tyneside best of all- a huge loss to Irish music, our condolences to Anna

Deeply saddened to hear of Tim’s death. Though we didn’t meet for many years I’l always remember him as a fine singer and a warm hearted friend. I was always glad to be with him in London and at home, sharing music and enjoying his family hospitality. My condolences to Anna, his wife, John his brother and the Lyons family.

Another fine singer who contributed so magnificently to the music we all love. I have added his name to the "In Memoriam" thread and my thoughts are with his family and friends.

Peter
