Subject: Lyr Add: NEW YEAR'S ROUND (Alix Herrmann)
From: Mark Cohen
Date: 27 Dec 99 - 10:56 PM

There is a tradition at the San Francisco Folk Music Club's New Year's gathering, Camp Harmony, of all the several hundred campers singing in the dining hall before dinner. One song that is always sung was written by Alix Herrmann, a SFFMC member and daughter of Lani Herrmann, long time Bay Area folkie, ethnomusicologist, and friend of Folk-Legacy. (Lani notated and calligraphed Gordon Bok's and Bill Staines' excellent songbooks for Folk-Legacy, and probably others I don't know, but Sandy does.)

Alix's song, called "New Year's Round" or "Ring It In", is not in the DT, but I believe it's in Rise Up Singing. Singing this simple round with four people is wonderful; singing it with a few hundred is pretty close to heaven. Here are the words; it would be great if someone could post the tune, so everybody can sing it for New Year's. Alas, I haven't been at Harmony for almost a decade, but I'm going to try for next year.

New Year's Round
by Alix Herrmann

Ring it in, ring in the New Year
Ring it in, ring in the New year

Bells are ringing, bells are ringing
Bells are ringing, bells are ringing

Peace and love, throughout the New Year
Peace and love, throughout the New Year

Joy, joy, joy!
Joy, joy, joy!

Aloha,
Mark

Thanks, Mark, I hope you do make it there next year. Also, hope this finds you doing well. This sounds like a fine song.

Caroline and I sing it with Cathy Barton and Dave Para on our CD-114: 'Twas On a Night Like This; a Christmas Legacy. Learned it from Lani, who also did graphics for us on a couple of LP jackets. My proudest moment was putting Lani in touch with Gale Huntington when I knew he was about to give up on getting the Sam Henry collection published. The end result of that modest effort on my part was a wonderful book edited by the two of them. That alone might get me past St. Peter, in spite of the rest of my earthly activities.

Sandy, you and Caroline have done so much for so many that you are assured of a place in the sun, and are entitled to all the earthy -- sorry, earthly -- activities you like.

Hi,

My Choir would like to sing this song for an upcoming concert. Anyway to get permission to perform? Aren't going to record or sell-just perform. We'd buy the sheet music if available-is it in Rise Up Singing? Would purchase of that book give us permission to sing? Thanks for any help you can give.
